As Jack let himself into Kevin's flat, he hoped that he wasn't too late. When he saw Kevin looking at the bookshelves, he grinned and went to hug him from behind.
"It looks fine, love. Anything you want me to do before Hermione arrives?" He kissed Kevin's cheek and then released him, going into the kitchen to find a drink.
It had been a hectic Monday, to say the least. The weekend had been nothing short of tumultuous, what with her somewhat making up her mind about George, no matter how hard it had been, and then receiving Harry's invitation. Not to mention that it was Harry's birthday the very next day, making things even more emotionally confusing.
But she had looked forward to her meet-up with Kevin and Jack more than she could have possibly said - two boys who would not cause her heartache or confusion or drama.
Once work finally let her go - there was the nice thing about it distracting her from her incredibly confusing social life lately - she went home and changed into something less dressy and apparated over to Kevin and Jack's place, a bottle of wine in hand, knocking on the door.
Kevin turned around in Jack's embrace. "No, we're good," he said just as heard a knock at the door. "And here she is."
He padded over to door, shrugging when he realised he was still in bare feet. Oh, well, he supposed he looked decent enough in his khakis and a nice, but untucked button down blue shirt.
He opened the door. "Hermione, good to see you; come on in, Jack's just arrived."
Jack came out from the kitchen, carrying three glasses of wine. "I thought I heard you arrive, Hermione." He leaned down to kiss her cheek, then handed each of them a glass.
"To the end of another day of Wizarding bureaucracy," he said, saluting them before taking a sip.
"Fantastic! This is for the two of you for having me over, by the way," she said, handing him the bottle of wine as she stepped inside.
Grinning at Jack and swiftly kissing him back, she took the glass and gave a nod at his toast. "This is fantastic, what is it?" she asked, grinning. "How were your respective Mondays?"
"Thanks," he said as he took the bottle and set it on the sideboard. "Glad you could make it. I think," Kevin said as he sipped his wine and looked at Jack for confirmation, "that it's a Cotes du Rhone he picked up."
Kevin gestured to the sofa and to two armchairs that were near the fireplace and the wall of bookshelves. "Make yourself at home."
"Glad you like it," Jack said as he dropped onto the sofa and stretched out. "There's a nice little wine shop between my place and here, and they often have interesting things in the sale bin."
He smiled at Hermione. "It was a Monday. What else can I say? We were full up with hearings today. You?"
"That's got to be handy; I have a nice little bakery right by where I'm at, so I always have fresh bread about once a week - that's very nice!"
Nodding, she smiled as she took a seat. "Oh, yes, true Monday-fashion. I was backed up with owls and then they laid two projects on me, both to do with the Tournament... you know, I can't believe they're actually going through with that - which reminds me, did you get invitations, too?" she asked, not certain whether he really had just sent out owls to all of Wizarding Britain.
"I think everyone did," Jack said. "We'll be there, of course - always fun to catch up with old friends." He smiled at Kevin. "Or go poking around the castle when it gets a bit noisy for conversation."
"Or something," Kevin said with a wink at Jack. He turned back towards Hermione. "How're things? Any less complicated? Or is it better if we stick to other topics? I've got a few new things from Flourish and Blott's, including the supposedly salacious history of the clients of Laverne de Montmorency".
Grinning at them both, Hermione took a sip of her wine. "Or something," she repeated, feeling the most relaxed she had in weeks.
"Really??" Hermione asked, eyes wide. "You got your hand on that? I may have to borrow that at one point. What else did you get?" Suddenly remembering what the initial question had been, she shook her head. "It's no big deal, we can talk about that. Er... they're still complicated, but I do hope things will sort of come to a conclusion on Friday? At the party? Well, I'll finally be able to confront Harry there and see how... things stand, of sorts. Bad thing I'm pants at shopping, which means that I'll be perfectly hopeless trying to look decent for the event. Oh well."
"I did get my hands on that," Kevin answered. " A few other things, Jack always makes good picks of history books and I found something on medieval Arabic potions making. You can read it when I'm done if you like"
He sipped his wine and then remembered the food. "Oh, we have snacks. Give me a moment." He went to the kitchen for the crackers, cheese, and fruit and called back over his shoulder, "I'm sure you'll look wonderful! I hope it will be fun; should be interesting at least with what I hear is a very interesting mix of guests!"
"Kevin's right," Jack said. "You'll look lovely, I'm sure."
He looked closely at Hermione, who was visibly relaxing into the chair. "You look like you've been a bit stressed, Granger. Is everything all right?" With a quick grin, he sipped his wine. "Kevin doesn't tell me anything important. Hit Wizards, I ask you."
