Was in the mood, might as well do more...

Oh My Ghost!

If I could summarize this drama in one sentence, it would be Pasta (the drama) x The Master's Sun. Because that was exactly what the drama is. Despite that, the premise of OMG! was not that exact... but it can be pointed out as such. Since for this drama, while having the setting of a love story involving an assistant chef and her senior/owner chef; it also involved a girl who was able to see ghosts. Also, a part where the main character, Na Bongsun chasing after Kang Sun-woo was 'sorta' similar with the way Tae Gongshil chased after Jo Joongwon. Both was sorta perverted, but the circumstances was different. In Master's Sun, Gongshil was clingy to Joo-goon because touching him could stop her from seeing or hearing the ghosts that followed her. But in OMG!, it's more to the fact that the ghost that possessed Bongsun thought the only way for her to ascend to heaven was to satisfy her virgin ghost grudge. Which somehow turned out that the truth was different that what was thought.

I love the parallel that both drama had with each other. Like in Master's sun, the reason that Gongshil could see ghosts was because she went into a coma years before and had roamed as somewhat a ghost herself. (And later made a wish for her to continue being able to see ghosts once she woke up from her coma) But unlike Gongshil, Bongsun was able to see ghosts due to her shaman bloodline.

While I was watching this drama, I stumbled to comments saying how they hated Bongsun as a character and saying how odd for her to still be so scared of ghosts despite having long lived with that ability. But really, I don't see how that would be weird. I mean, in Master's Sun at the beginning... Gongshil ended up somewhat gone half crazy after few years being able to see ghosts. And at the beginning, she was also very scared whenever a ghost appear before her looking like the way they died. Or having their appearance distorted. In contrast to that, how do you think the ability to see ghosts affected Bongsun who could see them since she was young? And surely, Bongsun haven't just seen ghosts with normal appearances; but also those that died violently as well as evil spirit. Esp through her shaman grandmother. I don't think she would ever be desensitized at seeing ghosts to the point that she not even fear seeing them. So having shrunk herself into a timid girl while having a bright personality revealed only through her blog, was not that far-fetched.

The drama had a good story throughout, and watching Bongsun grow into a confidant woman and finding her love was indeed enjoyable. And the love story was sweet.

Descendants of the Sun

I think I don't really have to describe much about this drama, cos I think by this point everyone should have known about this drama. Written by Kim Wonseok and Kim Eunseok, is a love story about a Special Force soldier and a doctor.

It's a rare theme for a drama.. since you don't really see people make a lot dramas involving a soldier. Movies... yes, you see a lot of military movies. And thankfully, it was received well. To the point that maybe, some might call the series to be over-hyped. Though to be honest... I'd say that attention this series received was over-hyped. The series? Not really.

Sure... the fact that Sijin was nearly invincible with all the near deaths he's got as well as his and Daeyoung magical survival near the end might be too much to handle for some, but I don't see it being so bad. Tell the truth if we had bad endings of either one or both of them dying or any of the girls dying due to grief, there would still people complaining about wanting a happy endings. You can't please everyone. At least the writer didn't pull an ending like Lovers in Paris. But that aside, the magical plot twist wasn't really out of place either... because despite the drama was set in a real-life situation, it also had some fantasy elements. And it was not just about Captain Yoo Sijin.

That said, DOTS was quite a refreshing story to me still. Aside from the fact it's a love story involving a pair of soldiers of different ranks as well as a doctor-soldier pair; this show had the male lead being the one struggling to get the female lead to return their feelings instead of the other way around, like how most Kdrama feature. And as much as Yoo Sijin had changed throughout the drama, Kang Moyeon also changed even more. And this drama also had another female lead being the one who was considered 'elite' (Myeongju) --not the guy--who tried to hook up with a guy who was of lower military rank than her. And instead of the usual 'evil' mother characters trying to break a couple... it's a father.

As for the plot... while some parts did have some flaws et al, but in the great scheme of things it's not really that big an issue. In the end, the drama was still more of a romance... rather than a military or a medical drama; yet still able to convey a glimpse of the military and medical world. The drama's blockbuster element... as well as melodrama was quite well-balanced. And the casts really did a great job and bringing their characters to life.

Aside from that, the drama had a pretty good array of theme songs and soundtracks that fully support the drama and helped in conveying the emotions in the drama.

Frankly, I don't really mind if there's a sequel to this drama. Or even if it didn't feature the main four characters, or focusing on the other existing characters. Or using a completely new cast, set in the same universe like with IRIS. Cos this drama shows, that as long as a story is well written--even without using the common tropes--it can be enjoyed and loved by many.
