Gone back to some of the backlogged reads since I kept losing the ebooks due to comp crashing etc... which led me to finding some of the newer star wars books that I missed. So... I finished reading two... plus one, from the Journey to Force Awakens series.
The Life and Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi by Ryder Wyndham
Set before Return of the Jedi, the novel opens up with Luke returning to Tatooine to Ben/Obi-wan Kenobi's old home. While waiting for news of the whereabouts of Boba Fett as well as Han Solo, Luke chanced upon a journal left by Obi-wan which also contained an instruction to create a new lightsaber...
Before anything, I'd like to say that I loved the way the author managed to tie the events from the prequel and the original trilogy well in this book. It's very engaging, to read more about a younger Obi-wan Kenobi's life prior to The Phantom Menace, as well as some of the scenes that were unexplored from Obi-Wan's point of view. And it also added depth to the character to see how the events had happened though his eyes. From the Clone Wars to Mustafar and to Tatooine, it was an enjoyable read to see what happened from Obi-wan' point of view during that confrontation with Anakin to the time when he had been watching Luke growing up in secret, and guiding young Luke onwards.
Also included, were narratives of some of the events that occurred during the original trilogy but from Obi-Wan's point of view. It's an amazing addition, and it added to the main story and and further completed the narrative of the story. Love this so much.
A New Hope: The Life of Luke Skywalker by Ryder Wydham
Set a few months after Return of the Jedi; Luke was now on a starship called A New Hope, as he wondered about what happened to his father. After an argument with Leia about the matter, Luke started to recall his past... back during the time he grew up on Tatooine until the time he joined the Rebel Alliance onwards. While looking for any mentions of Anakin on the database, he stumbled onto an article mentioning about a podracing win involving his father. Thus, Luke returned to Tatooine in search to learn more about his father...
I love how the novel open up and going back into the past, as the author started laying out Luke's story prior to A New Hope. And then bridged the gap on how he first got to know Ben Kenobi aka Obi-wan. The novel also expanded about the relationship Luke had with his family as well as the relationship with his late friend Biggs Darklighter. It's something that was welcoming to read due to the brief mentions of them in Episode IV as well as the fact it was implied that Luke's relationship with Beru and Owen Lars, as well as Biggs was really close. As well on how close Luke was (actually) with Obi-wan, other than just being an old hermit whom he happened to join with after a fateful encounter with two very peculiar droids.
Also, Luke's quest to learn more about his past was something that was intriguing, because it not only relate to how he wanted to learn not to repeat the same mistake as his father did... but also to trying to figure out his own place in the great scheme of things. A great piece.
Journey to the Star Wars The Force Awakens : The Weapon of a Jedi: A Luke Skywalker Adventure by Jason Fry
A young officer stumbled onto C-3P0, a protocol droid belonging to the legendary hero of the Alliance, Luke Skywalker. Thrilled to hear the tales about the great legend, Threepio told her of a mission his master once undertook... which led him to discovering the old Jedi Temple of Iedit.
A great read as it tells about how Luke ended up finding an old Jedi Temple on a planet called Devaron. Still new in the ways of the force, Luke was worried about his own ability as a Jedi Apprentice without a master. Led by a vision he sees, Luke ended up finding the old Jedi training grounds as he begun his own training there to become a powerful Jedi Knight as well as learning how to truly wield the Force as a weapon.
This novel read more like one of those droid tale series, considering the story started from Threepio telling a story. It didn't actually add much to the narrative of Force Awakens, but it does tell about how Luke discovered an abandoned Jedi Temple. And it was implied that later on this was the place where Luke would eventually attempt to revive the Jedi.
Also: Check out the promotional
