I try to avoid writing posts where I feel like I might need to be wearing a tinfoil hat, but... This IS the Bush / Cheney / Rove White House we're talking about here...
So... Tinfoil hat in place, consider the following:
Homeland Security / Bush decide Posse Comitatus is so 1878, and we shouldn't have to deal with it any more.
Later, congress says "No, really... We need that. Posse Comitatus. Srsly."
Bush signs, "Ok, Posse Comitatus." but adds a signing statement of "Unless I change my mind."
The Republican Primaries pass up several candidates who could probably have a better chance of winning, in favor of John McCain. Romney, for instance, just kind of bails, for no good reason, leaving a field of... Well... Nuts and Used-to-be's.
Oh, look! Obama wins the primaries! And he's... Uh... Black. And possibly Muslim. And ahead in the polls.
McCain chooses someone nobody's ever heard of... But who excites the hell out of
Gun Nuts.
the Religious Waaaaaay Right.
"Strict Constitutionalist" States Rights Form-Our-Own-Militia Wackos.
"If you even try to have an abortion, I'll kill you." authoritarian maniacs who have the no-shit-myopic-zeal to actually call themselves "right-to-life".
> Have I missed anyone prone to shoot first and ask questions later?
Slight McCain lead in the polls.
Economic Crisis. It's a known, but not often discussed or explained "fact of life" in politics that Democrats do better during economic hard times...
McCain campaign, handled by advisers who helped with Bush's campaigns and administration, reacts by running nine directions at once, twitching like a poodle who's had too much shock therapy.
People start calling for violence at McCain / Palin events.
Some analysts are saying the stock market instability is being artificially maintained by very large blocks of computerized, automated trades - although, I can't find a good source on that.
Before the last election, Bush legal teams were doing research into 'Just noodlin', here, but what, exactly, would be the emergency procedure for suspending an election, anyway?' I bet they still have those memos somewhere.
So... Yeah. I don't think I'll be surprised if something 'surprising' happens.
If I allow myself to go into full on conspiracy theory mode, just theoretically, suppose the "economic crisis" was supposed to cause a "real and present danger" that justified calling out the troops and suspending the election. But, that doesn't seem to be working.
The next option is either civil unrest because of the election going one way or another - and, really, at this point, no matter who wins someone is going to be fighting mad - or, there's another "terrorist attack" in the US.
So... Yeah. I'm not going to be surprised. It may be a mostly crazy string of mostly crazy ideas, but still... I don't think I'll be surprised if, somehow, it all comes together to create a crazy reality.
Oh... Did I mention recent "leaks" of information that the Bush Eavesdroppers were listening to way more people, way more often than they'd said? Really, though, can anyone but Nancy Pelosi be surprised about that?
Have I missed anyone prone to shoot first and ask questions later?
yeah, dirty cops. after "troopergate" good cops should hate this woman, but the dirty cops who are more willing to be called up and abuse their power to form a secret police during civil unrest will have no issue with her.
ive got property up in the white mountains, and property in canada. worst comes to worst, im running, hiding, and organizing an insurgency.
That said, anyone for forming, not a militia, say, but an organization dedicated to civilians acting to defend the country and constitution. (you know, what militias say they want to do, but never do)
