I find it curious how Adam's story here mimics his story within DW. I'm absolutely positive this is intentional on your part, but I like how it's been done, and within the framework of the story so that it's nearly not noticeable. In DW, Adam tries to work with the futuristic system to his advantage in order to obtain knowledge he's not allowed to have, and in the end has a hole in the middle of his forehead. Here, he tries to work with the Careers in order to gain time he's not going to earn on his own, and ends up....with a hole in the middle of his forehead. Same strategy, same end. (Sort of.) I like the symmetry. In a way, it seems closer to the original than any other DW character so far, except perhaps Rose herself.
(Incidentally, I'm guessing the reason that Amy is wrapped up in her own world has much to do with Rory. My current thought is that Rory was the other tribute from Four, and that he died, which is of course a very Rory thing to do. Can't figure if she killed him or not, though; could go either way.)
(Edited to add: No link to the next chapter here, btw. Eek!)
You're right on Adam. He thought he was smart enough to work the system to his advantage, and he was wrong. My perverse sense of humor dictated how he died.
You're somewhat right about Amy, though not Rory. We'll learn her story--and Rory's--in Part 2.
