The Hunger Games, that is. Excellent adaptation, overall. Definitely a few things to be all "Nyer" about, but, honestly? You can't make a movie without those. Thinky Thoughts, in no particular order:
Agreed on the early elements of sick-Panem-is-sick. I felt like it fizzled a bit when we got to the actual Games, but I was feeling it big time at the beginning (ironically with pretty much zero violence other than a bloody brick). Maybe I just reached painfully tired levels, though, so I'll watch it again and see what I think.
You already know my feelings that they wasted Thresh and Foxface and my eternal adoration of CATO, so I will just say that the knife-cuddling thing was perfect. Some kids have teddy bears. Clove has knives. It was very "But can I bring my favorite-favorite one as my token if I promise not to use it?"
Your Effie commentary reminds me of the line where she's like "I just think it's so wonderful that even YOU can enjoy the Capitol, even if it's only for a little while." Oh yes, Effie, surely they will enjoy spending the last week of their lives there. (Yet more amazing and violence-free nods to the sickness in Panem in the early parts of the story!)
Those Capitol kids actually gave me weird Capitol Kid Feelings that I never expected to have. I feel a fic building within me, but I'm not sure what it is yet.
I totally understand the time constraints of movies, but I really do mourn that we didn't get more of the other tributes. Mr. Ross? Can we please have some stuff off the cutting-room floor?
Clove/knives OTP 4EVA!
I've got sort of an idea banging around my head of what they do with the Capitol folks after the war. Head!canon says they exile most of them--force them out into the districts to work, replacing those who were killed in the war--and I'd love to eavesdrop on the thoughts of some Capitol girl in the tribute age range as she's forced out of her life of privilege.
Ah, so that's why I haven't been able to come up with anyone to even vaguely ship Clove with other than bffsoulmates with Cato. SHE'S DATING KNIVES. Not gonna think about the implications of this.
My heart actually bled for the Capitol kids there, which was totally unexpected (and an awesome touch). They're being destroyed, too, just in a different way than, say, the Careers. And the guilt if they ever realize it is such a burden, and we've seen that the Capitol isn't kind to its 'traitors.' Yeah, this is me feeling sorry for unlikely characters again. IT'S A KID THING.
On that note, I've actually wondered/worried about what they'd do with the Career training centers post-rebellion. Those kids' worlds just got destroyed, and I can imagine the rebels wouldn't think too kindly of a bunch of dangerous teenagers spouting crap about "long live President Snow, TRUE PANEM WILL RISE AGAIN" or whatever. This... concerns me. Hope Enobaria was able to go to bat for them.
Hey, what do you think of the idea of dropouts/cuts from the Career Academy often going on to be Peacekeepers? I'd imagine District 2 would encourage that choice, as it would get them out of the district.
Hey, I think it is the most perfectest idea ever. I was kind of already thinking that would be a very common career (erm, no pun intended) for the cuts. And I want to emphasize, and this is an unpopular opinion I think, that there's no shame on the ones who are cut most of the time. Maybe dropouts who left in some really cowardly way, but generally it's an honor to even go. I feel like they'd have to heap positives on to make people accept and participate in the program. Other common careers for them include positions of leadership in the District, and a lot of alumni go on to work at the Center, either as trainers or other staff. But dual purpose Career and Peacekeeper farms would be extremely useful to the Capitol, so they'd have to make it very apparent that there's still great opportunities for the ones who don't make it all the way.
I don't think there'd be any shame in getting cut, but I can't imagine District 2 would be too terribly eager to have a lot of trained killers sitting around, bored. Hence, Peacekeeper duty would be an ideal way to keep them busy, and to perhaps send the worse ones out for a tour of duty as far away as possible.
Agreed. And of course, another thing to remember is there are many different phases of being cut. There's the eight-year-old who was at the bottom of their class from the beginning and only made it a year, and there's that year's runner up. What they'd do with them would vary a lot based on that. There's also personality variations. I think Clove is a scarier thing to have around than Cato, for example, even though they're equally skilled.

In conclusion: CATO.
