When I was in college, I loved going down to the Oregon coast. Every chance I got, I'd head out with friends and spend the day on the beach or walking the streets of the coastal communities hunting antiques and saltwater taffy.
Today, I went to Seaside with my parents. And all I could think about, as I walked the beach with Mom, was how exposed I felt and how far away the hills were. How a tsunami the size of the one that hit the Tohoku coast would absolutely wipe Seaside away. And I wondered how many of the people on the beach with their children had any idea what to do if an earthquake hit and the water started to ebb.
I used to love the ocean. Now, I don't.
