I’m glad you like my picture of Jack, with his reluctance to shed blood. He reminds me of that line of poetry-“I shall die, but that is all that I shall do for death.”
How thrilling that you’ve been able to race sailing ships! I’ve only sailed on a wee tiny craft, so I feel very much like a person who has a kitten trying to use the experience to describe a lion. But even on a little boat there is no doubt that the wind is a Power. I’m glad you feel I’ve captured some of that experience.
It’s been important to me in this story to keep from dismissing even my minor characters as pawns. So I try to show how much they matter to the characters my readers do love.
I love the humour of the PotC universe, so I keep a bit of that in every chapter. Poor Anamaria has been spoiling to shoot at the Royal Navy for so long, I had to give her at least the chance to flip them the bird in the end.
The fact that you “ache” for both the navy boys and the pirates is totally what I was striving for. I have a huge personal philosophical objection to painting a person or set of people as “the enemy” and thus eliminating the possibility of seeing them as human. So I wrote both sides of the war. And I love them both. Norrington certainly has need of those friends who love him.
My little badass pirate who ran away with the story seems to have made a few friends in the world. I’m always delighted to see that.
Again, I’m all kinds of grateful to you for the nice things you say.
