Writer's Block: Commercials: the Best and Worst

May 25, 2008 09:29

Besides the Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce commercial "Handshakes" which I wrote and directed (www.lascruces.org at the bottom of the page if you haven't seen it yet)...I would have to say I love the commercial for Kleenex "Let it Out." Everytime I see it, I'm reminded of how fragile emotions are, and that sometimes, people just need to "let it all out." The fact that this "mediator" is just there to listen, and the fact that it's on busy street corners...it all kind of reminds me that sometimes it's okay to stop and talk about what's going on with your life even if it is with a complete stranger.

Another in the top five would have to be the Dr. Pepper commercial "I Would Do Anything for Love." Commercials like that tell a story, and when paired with the appropriate song can speak volumes. Here's this guy who does all the girly things imaginable with his wife or girlfriend or whatever, but man, when she reaches for his Dr. Pepper, forget it! He'll do anything...but that. Awesome.

Sony Bravia with the bouncy balls also holds a special place in my heart just because of the whimsy of it. The idea of bouncy balls coming down a hill in California -- just the concept is so cool to me. It's the commercials like that which you're not even sure what they're supposed to be advertising until the very end or even at all...those are the ones that deserve special recognition in my mind.

And who could forget the Cingular wireless, "IDK, My BFF Jill?" commercial? Classic, especially with all the texting and abbreviated versions of words these days.

As far as "bad commercials" ... I think I've repressed those. I really don't like poor locally done obviously on a small or non-existant budget type commercials. I.E. Mattress King, Furniture "Going Out of Business" Sales, or DWI commercials. Most of these are overdone or undercooked. It's as if someone had the idea in mind, but never really took it any further with any brainstorming or creativity whatsoever.

Can you not tell that I want to write commercials for the rest of my life? Sigh.
