Blaine had never believed that he could get a phone call like this. Not ever. If he were honest with himself he'd realize that he'd known intellectually from the moment that Brandon, his favorite cousin--his only cousin-- had joined the military that he could get this phone call. But he'd never believed it.

Brandon was one year older than Blaine and as children they'd been inseparable. "The Two B's" their parents had called them (and when he was five Brandon decided being called "The Killer B's" was much cooler.) They were never just Brandon or Blaine but always BrandonandBlaine. They even went to school together until Brandon started middle school and his family moved out of state. They managed to stay in touch over the years though, texting, skyping and emailing regularly. Brandon had been his only friend, his only support for years. And now he was gone.

What wouldn't stop gnawing on Blaine's mind was the fact that Brandon wasn't even supposed to be fighting. He was an only child in a family that had money. He was supposed to be safe in a building doing desk work. Unfortunately, that building doesn't move along with it's soldiers and while Brandon was en route to work his hummer was attacked and all of the people inside it were killed. That included Brandon. His Brandon.

The bell rang and Blaine realized he was supposed to go to his last class before Glee rehearsal. He knew he'd never make it through the period so he snuck to the library. Kurt had told him that Glee was the one place where you could always talk about what was going on in your life. What was even better was that Blaine could sing about it. There was a song in the back of Blaine's mind and he pulled out his iPod to listen to it while he printed his sheet music. With music in hand he slumped down against the floor and listened to the song over and over. He barely heard the final bell ring and he rose numbly to walk to the choir room.

"Mr. Shue? I know I'm kinda new to this but I have something I need to sing today." Blaine asked nervously.

Will took in Blaine's disheveled appearance and nodded at once. He never denied the kids the opportunity to get something off their chest and he could tell that whatever Blaine had to say was important. He watched as Blaine handed his sheet music to Brian then dragged a stool into the middle of the room and sank down onto it. Will saw Kurt gesture nervously to his boyfriend but Blaine just held up a calming hand.

"I uh, I don't talk about my family much and that's because I don't really have a relationship with them." Blaine started shakily. Suddenly, Blaine felt something crack in his chest and words came pouring out of him all at once.

"Except Brandon. He's my only cousin and we grew up together. He was my very best friend, the person I played with every day. He was a year older than me and in little kid terms that meant he was great at EVERYTHING. He was who I went to when I first realized that I was different from other little boys--he was the only person willing to stand up for me in my family when I finally came out. Even though he moved away 6 years ago, we still talked weekly. Last year after he graduated he decided that he wanted to join the army. Of course that was pandemonium--his parents and my parents tried to talk him out of it. People with money didn't have kids in the military. They could afford college, why would he want to endanger himself? I think he just wanted to get away." Blaine laughed softly and bit his lip.

The rest of the room was watching him with wide eyes. They'd never heard him speak so much all at one time. Blaine didn't offer information about himself and--with the exception of Kurt-- they all found him sort of closed off. Now he was pouring his heart out and even though they all knew where this was headed they were praying fervently that they were wrong.

"My mom called me an hour ago and told me that Brandon was dead. I don't know why she couldn't wait until I got home. Why tell me while I'm at school and I have no where to hide? There was no emotion in her voice. It made her and her brother right--people with money don't have kids in the military."He said bitterly then sighed. "I guess I should get on with my song. I've known this song for a long time and I've always thought it was pretty but now it's different. It's a song for Brandon." Blaine paused to take a deep breath and nodded to the band.

The room watched silently with tears streaming down their cheeks as Blaine closed his eyes. He seemed to go somewhere else completely as the music started softly.

Let them in, Peter
For they are very tired
Give them couches where the angels sleep
And light those fires
Let them wake whole again
To brand new dawns
Fired by the sun
Not war-times bloody guns
May their peace be deep
Remember where the broken bodies lie
God knows how young they were
To have to die
You know God knows how young they were
To have to die

Kurt fought the urge to rush up to his boyfriend and hold him but he knew the music was cathartic. He glanced around and pulled a pack of tissues from his bag and passed them around. Everyone was crying. It didn't matter that none of them knew Brandon-- it was easy enough to imagine that they did. The boy had been barely older than all of them--he could have been their cousin, brother or friend.

Give them things they like
Let them make some noise
Give dance hall bands not golden harps
To these our boys
Let them love Peter
For they've had no time
They should have bird songs and trees
And hills to climb
The taste of summer
And a ripened pear
And girls as sweet as meadow wind
And flowing hair
And tell them how they are missed
But say not to fear
It's gonna be all right
With us down here

Blaine had went somewhere else. As the words passed through him he could see Brandon. He could hear his voice. He remembered the last time they talked--only two weeks ago-- and how excited Brandon had been. He was playing around in an internet cafe and taking silly pictures. It seemed so long ago and Blaine regretted not calling him again. He had thought he'd have plenty of time and he'd been so busy with homework. He'd thought he'd have more time.

Let them in, Peter
For they are very tired
Give them couches where the angels sleep
And light those fires
Let them wake whole again
To brand new dawns
Fired by the sun
Not war-times bloody guns
May their peace be deep
Remember where the broken bodies lie
God knows how young they were
To have to die

You know God knows how young they were
To have to die

And tell them how they are missed
But say not to fear
It's gonna be all right
With us down here

It's gonna be all right
With us down here

The music faded and Blaine sat on the stool silently, his eyes still closed. Kurt was the first to move, he sprang to his feet and threw himself at Blaine. Blaine registered his boyfriend holding him and he was pulled from his memories. Suddenly it all seemed so real. The numb haze that had been surrounding him snapped and he could feel all pain and sorrow that had been building inside of him ever since he heard his mother's voice on the phone. A broken sob tore from his throat and Kurt held him tighter. Puck was next. He approached the embracing pair cautiously just in case Kurt didn't want him to bother them but then Kurt caught his eye and Puck was sure. He put his arms around the both of them and that gave everyone else the permission they were looking for. They crowded around Kurt and Blaine, offering support and love.

Blaine was awestruck by the support the club was offering him. He'd always thought of them as more Kurt's friends than his own but he could see now that the New Directions were a family and he'd been taken in. His only family friend was gone but maybe Brandon could see that Blaine had a new family now. Blaine was sure it would have made his cousin very happy.
