The San Diego Comic Con 2012 Report- Thursday!

Jul 26, 2012 01:27

Hey Gang,

So onward to Day 2 of SDCC - Thursday. I got up early and like the previous years, drove the Victory of the Daleks Toy Parcels out to the nearby post office behind hotel circle behind the Fashion Mall. this was painless only having half the load of previous cons. I hear most of these have no arrived in their new homes across the Atlantic in the UK or Australia.

With that chore done, I got back to find Teri getting ready in her Blue Science officer Star Trek Dress and 60's wig. Vickie had managed too get CJ his Spock gear the night before so the group was ready to go as a five-some. Scott and I would be sitting out the Trek Crew again (CJ was in fact wearing my Dr. McCoy boots and trousers so I'd have shown up underdressed if I had) to don other heroics colors. As fast as you can say Shazam, I quickly suited up as the DC Captain Marvel and we were ready to roll.

THURSDAY

Upon seeing the crazy line for the con shuttle we checked with Scott and Vickie who had a parking space at the convention center all week and it turned out we were pretty much on the same schedule. Vickie had Trekked up herself in a Lt. Red Dress and Scott was rocking Captain Action today, primarily for the panel happening later on. We loaded up some extra snacks/water and change of clothes and met them down at the front.

We drove down too the center, parked painlessly and got some more use out of the 'Pop-Up Changer Tent' which we placed under one of the garage lights to give a lot of good visibility inside. Scott planned to go it in civvies to take pics for a bit while Vickie suited up while the rest of us did last minute check or wolfed down a protein bar or banana. Because you know bananas are good.

Scott and Vickie's Trusty Pop Up Changer

Upon entering the con center we ran into a great Wally West Flash that we took pics with mainly to show the world why the character I play is NOT the Flash- note the differences in our red/yellow costumes! Although Could the Flash BEAT Captain marvel with the Speed of mercury? YOU DECIDE!

We wandered the floor briefly and it was cool to meet more Captain Marvel fans and the Trek fans while we winded our way towards Dan's booth where we planned to meet Dan as well as CJ and Lauren in their Trek Gear. We did make a stop by the Roddenberry booth during the only time we found the Captain's Chair open for photo ops so we took advantage. It's probably my fav Captain Marvel shot of this con!

After crossing paths with Mega Man, we ended up at Dan's booth and waited for a bit since CJ and Lauren were running late. It was fun to pose with fans and see Dan get into the swing of things.

Finally CJ and Lauren joined us. CJ had picked up a Star Trek Spock Magazine on the trolley down and kept it around as a funny prop to pose with. We stepped to one of the side entrances for a lot of group photos and started to wander the floor.

Just the Reds please

A few aisles away from Dan's Booth we found an odd pairing of a Female Cyclops with a larger than life comedy Spider-Man. it was an Odd Couple pair if you ever saw one.

The Trek Crew got stopped for a moment while I found Katie from our Gallifrey Skit (Nyssa in the Androids skit) wandering in her awesome looking Fire Costume. We caught up for a moment and then had to move on.

Katie as Fire

By the time I caught up to the Trek Crew they were at the Roddenberry booth getting photos but yet oddly Not Allowed to sit in the Captain's chair? Weird. They goofed off and posed with some Tribbles.

Our next stop was hitting the mezzanine where the kingon group usually hung out and sure enough we found a gang of them ready to take on the Federation!

While there we ran by our friend Tom from Big Wow dressed in his X-Wing Fighter Pilot costume looking ready for Rebel Alliance.

Finally, the Trek Crew moved on, while Scott, Vickie and I departed back to the Car while I grabbed a snack and Scott suited up as Captain Action. Vickie change dout into her civvies to take over camera duty but keeping her wig on to avoid post-wig funky hair. We made it back up to the 2nd floor in record time to catch the rather long line for the Captain Action panel. Scott was game to pose for fans and re-establish relations with the Captain Action Toy People who'd asked him to be there to help represent the brand.

Standing by for ACTION!

We also ran into the Star Trek Crew again who were having fun still wandering as a Foursome.

Action for the Star Trek Crew

Scott at the panel Line, Vickie out of trek Dress but still sportin' the wig.

It was fairly easy to get into this panel thank goodness unlike almost any other panels that weekend! We did come in at the tail end of a Transformers hasbro Panel with some very vocal uber-fanboys asking questions about why certain accessories were not correctly packaged the right away and why there weren't more female Autobots or Decepticons. it made you stop and realize where fan stereotypes came from.

The panel itself was cool- they covered some neat stuff for the toyline. Thor and Loki costumes were due out soon with an Iron Man planned. They were also planning to put out Dr. Evil- the Captain Action Villain very soon. A graphic novel and cartoon series is also planned that look like retro fun and worth checking out. They also gave out some fun squeezable brains and pulp art posters at the end which was nice to pick up!

The Captain Teams up with B9 Robot from Lost in Space!

Teri re-joied us Solo, while Dan retied to his Booth to relax and get off his feet while CJ and Lauren had to run off as well. In the Sails Pavilion, we ran across an excellent B9 Robot Replica which Both Captain had to pose with!

On the slow way back down to the floor we ran across a very cool Star Trek TNG Andorian which was impressive mostly due to the fact her antennae was mad eout of color plastic spoons!!!!

Back on the floor we ran across a phenomenal looking Deadman- fab costume and really impressive Make-up. You can see more of him at www.facebook.com/prologueofadeadman.

Back at Dan's booth we picked up a few items we'd left there like water, snacks and swag. While there Scott connected with one of the Green hornet Experts form the 90's who'd developed one of the top of the line Stinger Replicas out there that Factory Entertainment initially looked into using as a prototype for their own Stingers (which sadly have yet to come to be). But it was great to connect with like minded fans and compare costumes and props. In a strange way of life imitating life/toys- he asked Scott to put on the Green hornet gear for a photo- much the same way the real Captain Action Doll 'became' other heroes back in the day! Cool stuff.

Finally we made it back to the Car for a breather. The pop Up Changer came back out and Scott got back in civvies, I changed into the 7th Doctor costume and Teri switched to her newly put together Revenge of the Cybermen Sarah jane costume. Big thanks to Julie/azarsuerte and Sarah/minervamoon for the hlp/tips on this costume! I changed into Seven instead of Four because I had a new hanky/sweater to show off and I'd never worn the Seven costume myself at SDC- only loaned it out before! So hey there ya go. I was pleased that the family next to me actually recognized Seven- the wife said "Hey he has the Doctor's Sweater!" And the husband was really happy to see McCoy represented. We had a nice chat about 80's Who and how we both got into the New Adventure Novels and enjoyed McCoy's version of the Doctor.

Changing at the Car after the Panel to prep for the Who meetup.

Before heading back to the floor we stopped by the Seaport Village for a bite to eat. Teri and I got Sandwiches and pasta salad, while Vickie and Scott got burgers. It was more overpriced then we recalled and while the surroundings are pleasant, we decided we'd try and find more affordable food for the rest of the weekend. but I took advantage of getting some more Bacalava (And Teri a gourmet Cocnut cupcake) for dessert before we left!

Indy and a Stormtoorper - feelin' down about their latest movies.

On the way back we ran into cheapasair/Stephen briefly and oddly out of costume to talk a little on Who and hear about how he'd get to be lucky enough to interview matt, Karen and Arthur later on. I'll link to that later, it's pretty cool.

Inside the Con center, we ran into our friend Sam (Captain Marvel Jr and Mal Reynolds from last year) as Spider-man. We caught up and made some light plans to do some more Marvel Family action down the line before we had to depart.

Finally we made it upstairs to the Thursday Doctor Who meet up outside Ballroom 20 which already had a LOT of people attending. I have to say I'm always happy to see how these meetups seem to get more people every year. Kevin K. was there out of costume to catch up and hang. CJ and lauren made it - CJ in my Eight costume and lauren as a Femme Eleven.

Our Friend Malaki was there out of Costume carrying his Cyber helmet which we used as a prop. Ewan and Angel showed up as Eleven and Amy. Kevin C. eventually arrived as Ten with Ashley as a TARDIS Bunny. Aside from that it was mostly new faces. A lot of Elevens, Amys, Rivers, a good amount of Tens, a few Roses, a Martha, and a bevvy of TARDIS Dress and Dalek Dress girls. We also ran into our Entertainment Earth Dr. Who line buddies who were dressed as a Femme Four and Femme Five. I guess Four was chosen as it was her Dad's favorite Doctor and Five was chosen simply because the girl liked the outfit but hadn't seen any Davison episodes!

In the midst of the massive Crowd after the Ballroom 20 panel lets out around 8PM

Ashley as the TARDIS Bunny

There was a very cool Silence costume (you don't see many of those- literally). And there was a lot of fun grouping and pairings. We also had to fight the crowd that let out after a Ballroom 20 panel - something to bear in mind for next year- we may move off to the photo stage area side or outside on the steps or something to avoid this but honestly- this rush didn't last long and most people didn't seem too fussed.

Slowly people disappeared off to evening plans. Some went to the Dr. Who Fan meet-up at the Rock Bottom brewery which we had to miss sadly. Malaki, Kevin, Scott, Vickie, Teri and myself decided to grab some dinner so we checked restaurants and decided to head to the Hard Rock Cafe which was open later and not too crowded.

Daredevil crosses timestreams

Our friend Matt Rocking Daredevil (Photos by Scott Sebring)

We ventured a long walk into the gaslamp and had a bief encounter with Steven Moffat and (who i thought was) Sue Virtue! As I passed a Cafe idly looking at the menu I spotted Moffat in the doorway doing what looking like the same. He spotted me (still dressed as Seven mind you, Teri still dressed as Sarah Jane) he smiled and Sue smiled and laughed. I said "hey good to see you Moffat. Thanks for coming out to the US!" He nodded. I was in mid stride to ask for a photo but then... I decided he looked hungry, I was hungry- why bother the guy when we're all out in search of grub? We nodded out each other and I kept going. Oddly enough everyone else with me didn't clock him til he was a good 20 paces walking the other way down the street! I gotta little heat for not stopping him but honestly, I''d met Moffat a bunch at previous Gallifreys, it wasn't a big deal. Though I have to wonder what he thought of running into a 7th Doctor randomly in San Diego!

SyFy Channel Cafe on Thu Night

Giant Isis badge at the Archer Cafe

We had a quick dinner at the Hard Rock which seated us fast and had good food, if again overpriced for SDCC. We talked over our experiences so far (my main complaint really was just the corwding of people was getting to me more this year) and agreed security while more present at least was less rude so far than previous years. Also there seemed to be less cosplayers by at least... 1/3'rd less than prior cons. Malaki planned to wear his Cyberman and Christina her Giant Adipose at the BBC booth later on and we all talked of future costume plans.

Malaki Talking Shop with Shredder from TMNT

We wrapped up, ran into a TMNT Shredder on the way out (LOL), Kevin went in search of overnight parking, Malaki went to join Christina, and the rest of us got to the car and headed back to our hotels. CJ had stopped by earlier & left the eight Costume and Trek gear in the Car so I took that with to unpack in the room to take home on Monday. We de-suited and basically crashed out while our roommates Huston and Aubrey were out at a Wired Party and got in fairly late around 1AM- but we were so zonked it barely woke me up.

Tomorrow it would be time for some Batman and Avengers Action!

Will return shortly with the Friday SDCC Report!
