So I promised a breakdown of our costumes and I decided to start in order so here we go:

More Pics and Info
The 1st Doctor
This was the last Doctor we put together for the group under the most budget crunch.
So here's what we did to conjure up William Hartnell:
The Wig:
We got lucky here and found a long white wig at the Western Costume sale for $1. I spent a bit more having it styled to be slightly more Hartnellish at Wigs Outfitters in Hollywood. For those looking I suggest checking ebay, halloween shops and any good wig stores. You'll probably have to find one in the women's section and have it cut and styled accordingly. Most wigs will run $20-$60 but can run as high $180-$200 for a rare/nice wig. Another tip (that I know we want to upgrade to as well) is go for a lace wig to mimic the hairline along with a bald cap to fake the high Hartnell Forehead. A regret I have with the standard wig we bought is the wig had to be brought down too far to cove rour cosplayer's hair so it doens't look quite right. For those in SoCal I highly recommend Cinema Secrets in Burbank which has a great selection and knowledgable staff.
http://www.cinemasecrets.com/ If you go with a standard wig, I must recommend adding 2-4 wig clips to help avoid it riding back on your head.
We're working on upgrading this wig with a lace version that will create a new false hairline high on the head. If one has a full head of hair then a bald cap couple with such a wig would be the way to go to accurately recreate the Hartnell hair.
2009 - Gallifrey! One got the biggest Doctor overhaul because we had to toss the first version together from thrift store finds within 3 weeks. The only pieces we recycled into the current costume are: The Scarf, The Monocle, the pants, and the right hand dark ring.
(The old wig- Ack!)
We started by replacing the old Wig with a bald cap and a new lace wig in more of a light blond tone. This new wig was an alternate we got at the Western costume Sale for only $1 last summer. Our One cosplayer's wife spent several weeks going over make-up tests with latex and fake eye bags to help create the aged Hartnell look. In the end the make-up was lighten up and the eye bags were ditched.

The Sonic Screwdriver:
Well technicallly this predates Hartnell- he never used one so you're off the hook here. However for Two cosplayers, the Troughton Sonic was a silver Penlight. If you want to stretch Canon and say One had one of these as well you can buy silver penlights on ebay or at target. Energizer and Eddie Bauer make pretty good look-a-likes for $6.50-$.15 range.
http://www.target.com/Eddie-Bauer-V2-Pen-Light/dp/B000K1CWDW/sr=1-1/qid=1232326291/ref=sr_1_1/177-3564407-0294268?ie=UTF8&index=target&rh=k%3Apen%20light&page=1 The Cane:
We were after the Season 1 cherry wood spiral twist cane with ivory handle. The best place I found that offered something close was this site:
http://www.bestofnewengland.com/detail.aspx?ID=1278But it runs over $100 and we were on a budget so I ended up settling on this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-TWISTED-CARVED-SPIRAL-DERBY-WALKING-CANE-STICK_W0QQitemZ200242365764QQihZ010QQcategoryZ11681QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247 Which runs about $25 and is okay for the price.
BIG Update 1/15/09:
We've been upgrading this costume for Gallifrey. We decided to temporarily ditch the hat and cloak since Hartnell only wore them periodically. However this meant we were able to spare the funds to commission THE Season 1 Cane! Pics when it's done will be posted but in case anyone's looking you can write to Tony at www.battlefieldsticks.com, or his ebay seller ID 'stickwith character" and he'll be happy to make a Hartnell cane for you. Price range $100-$150 including shipping.
He did reveal a few points to me about this cane for those who may know someone else who makes canes or for those looking to make this themselves:
The cane is 34"-36" long. Non-rubber tip end. 4 twisty spirals (or 5 if you count the last faint 'bump'), the handle is an Antler (NOT Ivory as previously thought) forom probably Red Deer (although he had to use Fallow Deer for ours), there's a gold-tone metal 'furrel sleeve' which connects the handle to the cane itself, the body of the cane is probably a twisty maple, and color hue a brown or dark cherry wood. Although color can be matched from any wood through polycoating.
Full entry and pics about the new cane is here:

The Rings:
Hartnell wore a large dark oval ring on his right middle finger. He also wore a smaller flatter clearish green oval ring on his pinky on his left hand.
This is close to what we bought:
http://cgi.ebay.com/VINTAGE-SAPPHIRE-GLASS-OVAL-RING-CHUNKY-COSTUME-70S_W0QQitemZ220246926782QQihZ012QQcategoryZ3845QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247 I found decent costume rings that looked close enough for a few dollars on ebay. Otherwise costume shops, trinket stalls, anyplace that would carry vintage or costume jewelry are the best options here.
I actually just found a great match for Hartnell's Pinky ring in the mood rings at Junk For Joy in Burbank, Ca for $10. FYI for CA readers.
The Shirt:
A wing or wingtip collar vintage style dress shirt is ideal for this. However a Tuxedo shirt or even in a pinch a standard white dress shirt will do. Thrift stores, bridal/groom shops are the easy options here or your standard Dept. Store. La Valiere is the brand we got for our Eight and it makes an equally good One shirt in the pics.
http://www.davidsformalwear.com/retail.html Our One cosplayer happened to have a tux shirt so that a non-cost.

For One cosplayers looking for a good wingtip collar dress shirt that fits your budget look no further than anthonysformalwear.co.uk on ebay. They're often offer white wingtips in various sizes for $10 a piece (Buy-It-Now) due to overstock.

The Vest/Waistcoat:
Hartnell wore at least two different vests during his run. We were after the simple white with thin vertical black (almost dotted) striped or "fine candlewick pattern" vest he wears in Season 1.
Looking at a hi-res pic it looks like this might have been a knit patterns as it has some texture to it I missed previously.
Ideally the best approach here is to find a close fabric in the garment district/Jo-Ann/F&S and have the vest made by a tailor/seamstress.
We recently found a few decent matches for the Hartnell vest- a couple at Mood Fabrics off Pico in West LA. Another a Rayon blend at International Silk and Woolen and the last a blind luck upholstry fabric find in Garment District Downtown, L.A. - The last one was a really good match and we'll be upgrading the Hartnell vest using this.
The Vest Upholstry Fabric was found at:
Floret Fabrics
(213) 488-0092
We searched high and low for this fabric match - lucking out incredibly yet again in the fabric district of Los Angeles with an upholstry fabric for $4 per yard. Our One cosplayer's wife knocked this together out of a basic vest pattern and screengrabs mimicking the 4 front pockets (which ARE functional!).
(Happy to show off his fine vest! - Photo by Vickie Sebring)
New Vest for 2011 - same fabric as 2009 vest.
For SDCC 2008, being under a budget we were forced to go the thrift store route and most vests didn't come close so we opted for a generic off-white 'Five Doctors' vest- mainly because it was one of the only vests I found that would fit our cosplayer. We found this one at Iguana Clothing in Hollywood for under $10.
http://www.iguanaclothing.com/
Thrift shops, dept. stores, men's formal wear shops are the best bet and as always...ebay.
The Pants:
Again we were looking for the tapered hounds-tooth check pattern pants Hartnell wears in Season one. Beige undertone with a kind of red and blue thin check pattern. Like the vest, the ideal appraoch for accuracy is finding close fabric and having the pants made. But again we were under the gun so I searched high and low at thrift shops. We found this pair that's fairly close again at Iguana in Hollywood. Although I'd recommend Aardvark's in Pasadena too. The trick here if finding the pattern in the right style. Too many had a decent pattern but were obviously a 70's cut. Suit pants and dress slacks from the 50's and early 60's is really the ideal. **And remember that vintage sizes run smaller then modern sizes - so try before you buy always!** These pants can be had for $10-$25. I even found a decent Third Season style pair here too.
The Shoes:
Early on, Hartnell appears to have worn a black/brown two-tone ankle boots with a distinct heel. Although in later pictures he looks like he's wearing black leather dress shoes. We never found a good match for the ankle boots, but any traditional black lace-up dress shoe will work. Our cosplayer just used his dress suit shoes. Non-Cost there. I've also heard that this two-tone ankle boot were cloth top black boots.
Our One cosplayer for Gallifrey 2009 provided his own black dress shoes but we added canvas spats dyed brown in order to mimic the cloth top two-tone 'country boot' Hartnell often wore.
The Tie:
Hartnell seems to have worn a sort of thick version of the western bow tie meets floppy bow tie. It reads black usually but closer scrutiny of the color photos shows it was a satin navy or dark *blue* tie. Whether he alternated between the blue and a black for other stries I can't say.
I've read this is actually a foulard tie. I've seen this tie called a kentucky, a colonal tie and a string tie- all of which would need to be on the long and floppy side. (The String tie should not be confused with the "literal string tie" sometimes worn by men in the south- that tie is a Bolo tie. FYI).
Some similar ties can be found here:
http://www.gentlemansemporium.com/store/neckties.php?from=leftnav
But a really economical solution is to get a 3/4" Black fabric ribbon from a fabric store for only a couple of dollars. Cut it to a good length - say around 35" but measure based on your neck/torso along with desired look and tie in a bow.
2009 - We replaced the tie using a midnight blue satin (which according to a lot of color pictures is it's true color). This was leftover from a previous fabric batch our one cosplayer used for a 1st version of his Batman costume. Certainly beats a ribbon!
(New Rings, New Tie - Photo by Vickie Sebring)
The Monocle:
The monocle itself is a fairly easy find on ebay for a few dollars. A good black rimmed monocle in the 1" diameter range should do. Vintage thrift stores are always another option as are flea markets.
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37.l1313&satitle=monocle&category0= or here:
http://www.gentlemansemporium.com/store/001377.php The Monocle Ribbon: we used the same solution as the tie. We got 1/2" black fabric ribbon from Jo-Ann and cut it to around 45" long so it would hang nice and low and also look thinner than the tie and slipped the moncle on it. About $5-$8 altogether.
The Scarf:
Watching ebay, thrift stores, clothing shop of your choice are the main options here.
For ours we used spare material from the Four neckerchief fabric I bought because the stripes doubled nicely as a One Scarf from Unearthly Child. We had a second scarf made in the same fabric only wider, shorter and with squared ends. The fabric ran about $5 a yard, the making of the scarf was in the $30 range.
Although my one regret is that as good at is looks, I didn't make this quite long enough- it needs to be about a foot or two longer and it also needs tassels but hey- another item to upgrade down the line.
The Cloak:
Hartnell wore a long heavy cloak off and on in stories like The Massacre, Planet of Giants and An Unearthly Child. It appears to be a dark grey wool/gaberdine with a black velvet collar and a large silver chain clasp. Something in the range can be easily had through any Halloween shop if you look for all black dracula cloaks or victorian looking capes.
A good place for a higher end cloak where the chain clasp and collar could be made closer would be would be www.twinrosedesigns.com.
For our budget version- I took my old Zorro black cape which came from a Halloween kit costume. I snipped the red string ends off and bought a seperate chain clasp on ebay. Then we sewed on the clasp and used black velcro for the other end. Cloak: non-cost, velcro: extra from my Cyber-outfit non-cost, Clasp: about $10.
2009 - We finally scored a better cloak through an ebay seller who turned out to be a Who fan and was gracious in taking the time to source a good velvet and fabric for the cape. She even adjusted the chain clasp to look more screen accurate. Kudos to her big time. Sadly due to the time rush we never got a full picture with new cloak, hat and scarf on our cosplayer. Oh well, for next time.
The Hat:
Hartnell's hat is a Black Fleece Wool Ambassador Style Russian Hat. It can be had through this ebay seller:
http://myworld.ebay.com/*damco*/ He also wore a white panama hat with a black hatband on occasion (see the beginning of the Daleks and The Daleks Masterplan episode 10). Unlike Davison and McCoy, this Panama is a fedora style (pinched crown) NOT the Colonial/Optimo style.

http://www.berkeleyhat.com/russtyldipha.html or here:
http://www.russianlegacy.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1690&cPath=32_45_274_147
We went for the first option. Cost about $85 after shipping.
2009 - After this hat was lost, i finally re-ordered it from the seller where I got the first (and now lost) one from.
The Frock Coat:
Hartnell appears to have worn slightly modified short Black Frock Coat or Long Tux Coat - double breasted, 6 black front buttons on each side- totaling 12- plus 3 buttons per sleeve, two flapped side pockets, one left breast pocket, a single rear vent and rounded lapels/shawl collar. It appears to have a very mild cuataway but not as severe as Morning/Cutaway Frock like Troughton's.
Sidestepping the buying/making a custom frock route (which I think is the only real option for duplicating this coat) - Similar coats are best had either at Bridal/Groom shops, Thrift Stores (my best recommendation here is Junk For Joy in Burbank- which had lots of vintage frocks but all too small for our modern builds sadly)
http://www.junkforjoy.com/shopping/PriceList.asp?sType=335
and of course Wahmaker/Gentleman's Emporium -

Here's a pattern which I think makes a getter One or even Two coat:
http://www.butterick.com/item/B3721.htm?search=3721&page=1 Other patterns which may be modified for a One Frock:
http://www.lafnmoon.com/frock_coat.htmlhttp://www.simplicity.com/dv1_v4.cfm?design=2895http://www.buckaroobobbins.com/page12.html Our Blue Ten cosplayer happens to own one of the Black Wool Frock Coat from this site so he loaned it to our other cosplayer and that's what we used. So luckily non-cost!
2009 - We replaced the above coat with one that was more midnight blue in tone to help offset against the cloak. This was found at It's a Wrap for $30. The lapels were rounded, extra buttons added to create the 12 button front look (courtesy of Jo-Ann), the bottom edges were rounded slightly and the sleeves taken in.
(With a Matt Smith cosplayer- sporting the new coat - Photo by Vickie Sebring)
Another trick on buying one of these Frocks on the cheap is to try It's A Wrap thrift shop in Burbank (
http://www.itsawraphollywood.com/history.htm)which gets used production clothing including western wear, or if you know of any Civil War renenactments happening near or in your area, show up and see if you can strike a deal with any of the clothing vendors. I hear they often are willing to lower the price and sell coats like these second hand for dirt cheap prices.
You can also check anthony's formal wear again as well - although they tend to offer velvet jackets for sale and not wool through thier ebay site but you never know.
http://stores.ebay.co.uk/anthony-formalwear-clearance www.anthonyformalwear.co.uk
"tails" jacket is a good "Two" or passable "One" style - Black only. They may eventually offer an ex-hire in suiting material and not velvet.
Update Summer 2011:
Baron Boutique now offers the Hartnelll jacket. May not be on thier website yet but they made it for me and I think they nailed it.
www.baronboutique.com
$279.00 cost with shipping.
Baron Hartnell Coat
Tee shirt:
Also Forbidden Planet is offering a Hartnell Costume t-shirt for 16.99 gbp or about $25.00.

So that's how we knocked together a One costume in 3 weeks. I'd like to still upgrade the vest and coat (and heck, even the cane and wig - not to mention replace the hat which was sadly lost and also why it was never seen
at the con) but it's a good starter version.
VanDonovan handled the Two costume and perhaps can be persuaded to do a Two breakdown for you guys. Otherwise there's this lovely Post here for Two:
