Character(s)/Pairing(s): Yamamoto/Ryohei
Disclaimer: The world of Katekyo Hitman Reborn! belongs to Amano Akira.
Summary: Sometimes we lose something important to us only to gain so much more.
A/N: A quick drabble for
sesshounokon using the prompt “earmuffs” and the obvious pairing. It … actually has no plot. Mere fluff is what this is. You have been warned!
Winter air brushed against his cheeks, stinging them with bitter cold. He pulled his hat down to cover his ears, shivering, and continued on his way to school. Yamamoto Takeshi liked many things, but being cold was definitely not one of them. Simply put, Takeshi was not a big fan of winter, which was why he quickened his pace, hoping to get to his destination faster than he had originally intended. He was halfway there when a gust of wind blew his hat off and, despite his futile attempts to grab it, said hat ended up getting away.
Casting one last mournful glance in the direction his now departed hat, he picked up the pace again. The cold wasn’t going to win, and Takeshi did not lose. But, as Murphy’s Law stated, anything that could go wrong would go wrong. Hence why he ended up face first in the snow, gasping from the cold. He turned around, ready to ask for an apology from the person who had more or less bulldozed right into him. Whatever it was he was about to say died on his lips as soon as he saw who it was, a quirky smile and a laugh welcoming the new comer. “Sasagawa! Long time, no see!” He rubbed at his arms, subtly trying to keep warm since he was standing still for once instead of moving. Ryohei, as if in parallel with him, was running in place, beaming at him and looking too happy to be natural in this unholy weather.
“Oi, Yamamoto! You’re early, aren’t you?” Takeshi frowned, still rubbing at his arms. How would Ryohei know if he was late or early? He didn’t stick to a particular pattern when it came to getting to and from school, it was just during winter that he always … Oh, he thought with a realization that had him blushing, maybe senpai does know more about me than I first thought. “Hey, where’s your hat? You always have an extremely funny hat on! Where is it?” Ryohei seemed genuinely curious, and a little concerned if Takeshi was reading into that correctly.
Lifting one shoulder in a half-hearted shrug, he waved a hand in the vague direction of where he had last seen his hat. “It’s no longer with me,” he ruefully replied. That had been one of his favorite hats, no matter how funny it had looked. It was hard to find a good duck-shaped cap these days. “Anyway, you seemed to be in a rush, senpai. Am I holding you up?” He tried to stop his teeth from chattering, but he had a feeling Ryohei noticed because an arm was slung around his shoulders no sooner had he spoken and Ryohei’s booming laugh filled his ears, too close for comfort.
“Of course not! Would I be talking to you if I was in a hurry?” His upperclassman started guiding him to a nearby bench, tugging him down to have a seat alongside the other Guardian. “Besides! You’re the extreme person I wanted to see! I was hoping to get here before you, but since I didn’t … well, it ended with our extreme collision back there!” Ryohei looked down, a sudden embarrassed flush to his cheeks, intriguing Takeshi as he leaned into the boxer’s side with a grin. “W-Well, this is kind of weird, but … you know you’re my extreme friend, right?”
Takeshi nodded, confused where this was going but interested all the same. “Yeah. Yeah, I guess so. Something up, senpai?” It was Ryohei’s turn to nod, but much more eagerly than Takeshi, which implied that whatever it was the boxer wasn’t telling him it wasn’t a bad kind of secret. That was enough to put Takeshi’s mind at ease and he continued to make himself comfortable next to the other Guardian, soaking up the warmth another body had to offer.
When Ryohei started fidgeting with something in his pocket, Takeshi realized what exactly he was doing, practically nuzzled against the boxer like a cat to its owner, and quickly put a little space between them. He was about to get up and head to school like he had planned, but a hesitant hand on his wrist stopped him. Takeshi blinked and looked down, surprised to find something in his lap to go along with that hand. “Are those … earmuffs?” He couldn’t help but laugh, the fact they were duck earmuffs not escaping him, but that only seemed to make the Sun Guardian self-conscious about his gift. He shook his head, still chuckling, and said between fits of laughter, “I really like my present, senpai! Thank you.” He had ended up losing his favorite hat, sure, but this more than made up for that. Putting them on, he elbowed his friend in the side slightly, letting him know the gift was appreciated in his own special way, and then stood. Reaching out, he grabbed one of Ryohei’s hands and pulled him up as well, grinning from ear to ear. “Now let’s get going before we’re late!” He would have to think of a return present for his fellow Guardian, something his friend would appreciate beyond anything else. As they walked together, hand in hand since Takeshi hadn’t yet let go, he considered what Ryohei liked. There was boxing, friends, the mafia game they all loved to play, and …
Without a second thought, he brushed his lips against Ryohei’s cheek and said it again. “Thanks again, senpai. You’ll have to let me know what it is you want in return, okay?” Ryohei turned bright red at the innocent enough question, making Takeshi a little confused but that didn’t deter his spirit. “Do you have anything in mind already?”
“N-Nothing! TO THE EXTREME.” Takeshi gave his friend an odd look, but didn’t comment. If Ryohei didn’t want to tell him something, it was probably for a reason.
