Covid and Book Update

Jun 22, 2022 18:48

Well, it finally happened even with the vaccine on board I finally caught Covid. Was at my sisters for a graduation party the next day her family came down with what she was calling the "flu" and two days later I started to feel poorly. The next day I felt worse than I have felt in a really long time. Slight fever, body aches, chills, a bad migraine, and I just felt off in a weird way that is hard to explain. Took a home covid test and confirmed what I was afraid of. Then the rest of my family came down with it (all except my dad *fingers crossed* he lives with us and has copd and we have all been trying to stay away from him.) That was a week ago and I finally have enough energy to try to post. For about a week I have mainly been scrolling through my dash and trying to keep up with posts although I have probably missed some of your guy's stuff. I feel better, but I get so tired so quickly even if what I am doing is super easy. Covid is awful and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. These reviews probably aren't that good, but I am so tired of being sick and just want to do something normal that I am posting them anyway. lol

I haven't really even wanted to read all that much except comfort reads/fanfic. Here are a few I have finished one fantasy, one action/adventure, one sci-fi, and one mystery:

The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah
Loulie al-Nazari is the Midnight Merchant: a criminal who, with the help of her jinn bodyguard, hunts and sells illegal magic. When she saves the life of a cowardly prince, she draws the attention of his powerful father, the sultan, who blackmails her into finding an ancient lamp that has the power to revive the barren land-at the cost of sacrificing all jinn.

With no choice but to obey or be executed, Loulie journeys with the sultan’s oldest son to find the artifact. Aided by her bodyguard, who has secrets of his own, they must survive ghoul attacks, outwit a vengeful jinn queen, and confront a malicious killer from Loulie’s past. And, in a world where story is reality and illusion is truth, Loulie will discover that everything-her enemy, her magic, even her own past-is not what it seems, and she must decide who she will become in this new reality. ~Goodreads description

This was a great beginning to a new series. I greatly enjoyed it. I liked the way the author switched pov's between the three main characters. The plot was well written and just draws you in. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger but it's done in a good way so I didn't mind it. I'm just sad that I have to wait for the sequel which doesn't even have a date on it yet but I hoping maybe next year.

Fear of the Dark by Trevor Baxendale
On a moon of the ruined planet Akoshemon, an age-old terror is about to be reborn. Something that remembers the spiral of war, pestilence and deprivation - and rejoices in it. The Fifth Doctor joins a team of archaeologists searching for evidence of the planet's infamous past, and uncovers more than just ancient history. Forced to confront his own worst fears, even the Doctor will be pushed to breaking point - and beyond. ~Goodreads Description

I really enjoyed this story. The 5th Doctor, Tegan, and Nyssa are one of my favorite teams from Doctor Who so I was excited to read this story. It was really good. The storyline was intriguing and the overall atmosphere was suspenseful. I loved how the Darkness started to effect everyone including the Doctor. Doctor Who will have darker episodes from time to time and this one was definitely one of those because there is a high death count and things get really bad for while. All in all a good book!

The Labors of Hercules by Agatha Christie
Overall, I enjoyed this grouping of short stories, most were good, although some were just okay. I thought it was clever that Ms. Christie used the myth of the labors of Hercules to connect all the stories. I am rarely disappointed by her tales all in all it was very entertaining.

Pirate by Clive Cussler
I enjoyed this book much more than the last one in the series.  The Fargo's were much better written and more likeable.  Their search for the treasure was fun and as always, I love their relationship.  Although Cussler's books tend to be formulaic, they are still entertaining in a mindless low-tension sort of way and sometimes I need that.  Of the three series I have read from him the Fargo's are currently my favorite and I will definitely read the next one.
