Last Books of June...First Books of July

June kind of got away from me. I hope you have all had a good last couple of weeks! Here are the last books of June...first books of July.  My Summer Bingo card is Here.

I really liked this mystery. I loved the main character Hester she is tough and fragile at the same time. The story was very well written and the plot was so intriguing. The author does a really good job ramping up the tension as the book goes on, especially once Hester reaches the space station. Basically outer space is owned by a few corporations and Hester has to work for the corporation that saved her life after a terrorist attack at least until she pays off her medical debts. When an old friend contacts her with a message that makes no sense Hester is confused but when she learns that friend was murdered shortly afterwards she is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery. My only quibble is I wish we had more information on what happens afterwards I would have loved a long epilogue, but that is only a minor hiccup in an otherwise very well done novel. This review isn't doing this book justice, I highly recommend it!

Seventeen-year-old Clara is ready to fight back. Fight back against her abusive father, fight back against the only life she’s ever known, and most of all, fight back against scrabs, the earth-dwelling monsters that are currently ravaging the world. So when an opportunity arises for Clara to join an international monster-fighting squad, she jumps at the chance.

When Clara starts training with her teammates, however, she realizes what fighting monsters really means: sore muscles, exhaustion, and worst of all, death. Scrabs are unpredictable, violent, and terrifying. But as Clara gains confidence in her battle skills, she starts to realize scrabs might not be the biggest evil. The true monsters are the ones you least expect. ~Goodreads Description

I quite enjoyed this book. I thought the premise was an interesting one and a very well written. I loved Clara and found her very relatable character. She was tenacious even though she was very scared and I admire that. Clara really grows up in this book as she fights both man and monster. I thought the twist was very well done. I can't wait to read the sequel! (I am using this one for the "Read a Book about a Period of Maturing" Square)

This is my second Jessica Fletcher novel and I am really enjoying them. I loved the whole premise of Jessica and few residents of Cabot Cove getting the a chance to fly to England and see the sights. Of course along the way a murder happens and Jessica and Detective Sutherland from Scotland Yard have to solve the whodunnit. I thought the mystery was an interesting one and I enjoyed the gentle flirtation between Jessica and the Detective and I wouldn't mind if they ever did become a couple. My one caveat was how the murder was revealed it felt a bit dramatic but overall I loved it. (I am using this for the "Vacation Destination Square."

The Amrithi are outcasts; nomads descended of desert spirits, they are coveted and persecuted throughout the Empire for the power in their blood. Mehr is the illegitimate daughter of an imperial governor and an exiled Amrithi mother she can barely remember, but whose face and magic she has inherited.

When Mehr’s power comes to the attention of the Emperor’s most feared mystics, she must use every ounce of will, subtlety, and power she possesses to resist their cruel agenda. ~Goodreads Description

This was a really good story!  The world building was top notch and the main character, Mehr,  was complex and likeable.  I loved both Mehr and Amun and their relationship that was so well written it is such a slow burn but the author puts in the work so that you are rooting for them by the end.  I love love love how gentle and kind they are with each other especially since the world these two inhabit is so cruel to them and because of who they are they are barely considered human by those who use them.  It is a hard book too read at times but the ending is gratifying even while acknowledging there is a lot more work ahead.
