I am absolutely in love with this book and I am full of regrets that I did not read it sooner. Helen & Gilbert now have a place in the library of my heart. Anne Brontë did an excellent job of dealing with very difficult subjects, spousal abuse and alcoholism, especially considering the time period in which she wrote it. I really enjoyed how the author flashes back so we get Helen’s views and thoughts about her romance and her ultimately abusive marriage to Mr. Huntingdon and what lead her to running away and becoming the Tenant of Wildfell Hall. It does get a bit preachy in the middle but it is more of a quirk of when it was written then a fault. Honestly this book feels more realistic then my other favorite Bronte book Jane Eyre. In it Helen learns a lesson that we all must learn you cannot change someone, no matter how much you love them. I definitely agree with Anne that most brooding, rakish, men will end up being more like Mr. Huntingdon then Mr. Rochester. So so good, I highly recommend it!
I have been so busy lately, that I barely know which direction is up and in a few short hours it begins all over again. Dude, I am so worn out right now. In a couple of weeks it will be better but for now I have to keep on keeping on.
On a positive note one of the books I have been looking forward to this year comes out this week. Martha Wells' Murderbot Diaries: Artificial Condition. I really loved the first book. All Systems Red really kick started my return to the regular reading of books, I had quite the dry spell going before then, so I am excited to return to the book series that helped me so much.
