This meme shouldn't be hard. For fuck's sake, I have an excuse to write about food and eating. But sometimes I stay away from the internet enough that I forget. Today is the first day off I get to share with my mister since we vacationed together in 2008. No, really. And stupidly I checked my email this morning, only to get involved in derby drama. So much for a day off.
Back to two days' worth of meme:
Day 5. Your signature dish.
I assume this means a dish I create for which I am known. My crazy peanut butter-marinated barbecue tofu gets raves from everyone who tries it, including fussy omnivores. I think I've shared the recipe more often than I can count. I also have to share my vegan Kentucky Derby pie recipe a lot, though sometimes I overdo it with the bourbon. Oops.
Day 6. Are/were you a picky eater?
As a child I was a very picky eater. I remember trying to find ways to clear my plate of certain foods and dishes without actually eating any of it. I stuffed my cheeks full of food without chewing, and created landfills all on my own with disposable napkins full of semi-chewed food. I tried the "I have to use the bathroom" trick a lot, so I could flush food down the toilet. I hated onions, peppers (raw or cooked), nearly every seafood or poultry or liver dish that hit my plate. Honestly I recall liking very little food as a child. If I could have lived off cheese omelets and Cheerios, I would have. (The idea of this now makes me a little ill.)
My mother tells me that my going veg was the best thing that ever happened to me. All the foods I used to detest suddenly became palatable, even enjoyable. If you would have told my elementary school self that I'd grow up to savor brussel sprouts, all varieties of greens and peppers, and mushrooms, that little girl would probably puke on you. So I don't think I'm picky, but others do (see the answer to question 1).
