This week of my life was quite frustrating.
It all started off on Monday (I'm giving you the Reader's Digest version) when Nancy, the lady in our office that handles HR calls me into her office. According to them- I owe my boss hours and if I don't make them up I will be docked in my final paycheck. This is illegal! I didn't know that it was illegal at the time. I was more shocked and upset that after being with the company for almost three years (which is quite an accomplishment at Manis & Co.) that I would be treated a little bit better. So the end result was that I either make up 6.8 hours in a week or get docked from my final paycheck. I did research on Thursday and found out that according to the Fair Labor Standards Act as a salary basis employee they cannot dock me. I spoke with Nancy yesterday about this, bringing in relevant portions of the FLSA. Let's just say it didn't go well because she didn't understand the whole salary basis thing. I was so upset and frustrated that I only worked 8 hours yesterday. F*** them. If you're going to dock me even when you can't then I'll make it a nice round number so you don't have to struggle with the math. And since I bill out at say $125/hour you'll lose more money by me being disgruntled and not working. I worked a 9 hour day.
Everyone should be familiar with employment law so you don't get screwed over! Go to the dol.gov for the Dept. of Labor for the FLSA and other helpful info. Yay government.
Then on Tuesday, the man that bought our car shows up and says "Where's the car?" Chris and I look at each other ask for a minute to talk and come to the conclusion that either the car was stolen or towed without warning because we took the tags off on Friday (when the guy was supposed to pick it up). The car was in fact towed and in impound. I had to go to get the car b/c I was the title holder, and subsequently I ended up paying $211 to get the car out. The loser buyer should have offered to pay or split it halfway, but no, that would be too much to ask. I like doing nothing more than spending when I don't really have that much and I have to move to Pittsburgh and buy CPA books that cost $3,000 and register for the bloody tests as well. Oh yes, please let me pay for your car to get out of impound. I worked a nine hour day.
So then, on Wednesday, it was fairly low-key. I had the opportunity of talking with one of my friends about our upcoming Next Generation marathon (I had a gut feeling that he forgot). My gut was right. He said that he was unable to come. He made other plans that he couldn't talk to me about because it was "complicated." My gut feeling was the he had a date...my gut was right. The sad thing is is that I didn't get a call, email, or even an IM later about why he made other plans. No- I had to find out when I talked to one of my other friends that was coming that he did have a date and that there was post on his blog. That was a nice touch. I worked a nine hour day.
Thursday was uneventful- thank goodness! I couldn't handle being at the office for another 9 hours- I only made it 8 1/2 hours.
Friday, other than the lovely discussion with Nancy the death eater, was an okay day. I only worked 8 hours. I had to get out of the office. The Next Generation marathon was a lot of fun. Jon, Brittany, Audrianna, Maria, and Aaron came. We had really good food- Maria made home made egg rolls and Audri made delicious pumpkin bread muffins- and a lot of good fellowship. We talked and chilled for a couple of hours while we cooked and then we watched Encounter at Farpoint (parts 1 & 2) and then the Presidential debate. I fell asleep part of the way through the debate. It was overall a lot of fun.
Today is the Golden Crowbar Tournament (a video gaming marathon). If I explain it I will appear more nerdy then ever. So enough said.
I'm excited for next week because Tuesday is my last day at the heinous Manis & Co. and I will be able to start packing for our move. We should be leaving on 10/5/08.
The silver lining for this week was 1. the Next Gen Marathon and 2. I will have a part time job at the accounting firm that I interviewed with back in August which is perfect while I study for the CPA.
I'll post updates as they happen.
