1. What did you do in 2016 that you'd never done before?
moved away from the city where i lived, on and off (but mostly on), for almost 30 years.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
i think my resolutions were:
less screens, more books -- TOTAL FAIL.
exercise more -- SUCCESS. joining the Y was/is one of the best decisions i've ever made.
for 2017:
1. pass derby minimum skills assessment
2. less screens, more books
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
my best friend gave birth to a perfect little papaya.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
people close to those i am close to died.
5. What countries did you visit?
none.
6. What would you like to have in 2016 that you lacked in 2015?
more $$$ and clarity regarding where i stand in a certain relationship.
7. What date from 2015 will remain etched upon your memory, and what for?
11/8-11/9.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
probably finishing 56 days of WLC.
9. What was your biggest failure?
another year of underemployment.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
lower back problems for 10 weeks now.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
our brentwood home mattress.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
e's. this has been a big year for her in myriad ways not the least of which has been moving and going from 3 years at brooklyn free school to a public school. she took it all in great stride.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
trump and all the millions of people who voted for him.
14. Where did most of your money go?
rent and food, as always.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
the ocean on the outer banks. ian's new job. roller derby.
16. What song(s) will always remind you of 2016?
everything off beyoncé's self titled album which was my running music as i trained for an 8K.
everything off modern vampires of the city and all of sylvan esso.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
happier.
ii. richer or poorer?
poorer.
iii. thinner or fatter?
a bit thinner, i think? i don't weight myself so i don't actually know.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
letting go of inconsequential hang ups.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
obsessing.
20. How will you be spending the Holidays?
we spent thanksgiving at ian's grandma's on long island then came back to ny for christmas at the in-laws and saw my parents for hannukah. new year will be spent with eloise and ian. if e and i stop vomiting (norovirus) by tomorrow night, we will put e to bed around 10:30pm and go a friends' nye party for fireworks and champagne.
22. Did you fall in love in 2015?
no.
23. How many one night stands?
zero.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
stranger things. game of thrones. the wire.
gilmore girls (all 3 of us are OBSESSED with the gilmores!). yup, we are late to this game.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate last year?
no.
26. What was the best book you read?
daytripper by fabio moon.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
william tyler's "modern country" album.
28. What did you want and get?
new glasses that i've coveted since the summer. a positive working relationship at lerner. a job for ian.
29. What did you want and not get?
the first female president.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
"the handmaiden", which i looked forward to for many months, delivered. a brilliant remake of one of my favorite books.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
37... agnes and alex visited for my birthday weekend. the heat index was close to 110. we went to the north carolina museum of art, had an absolutely incredible dinner at mateo's then watched the perseid meteor shower at jordan lake. my actual birthday fell on a monday and the 3 of us went out for a quick dinner at heavenly buffaloes and watched gilmore girls.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
hillary clinton winning the electoral vote.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2016?
very 2008-2015. jeans and v-neck uniform plus head wraps plus/minus cardigan. dresses, lightweight pants, and toms in the summer.
34. What kept you sane?
my dear friends. my offspring.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
bernie sanders.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
i can't even.
37. Who did you miss?
friends and family in NY.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
from my derby teammates to eloise's new friends' parents to all the people i met briefly 6 years ago and reconnected with when we moved here -- so many interesting, passionate, creative, badass people.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2016:
while i love nyc life outside it does wonders for my mental health.
