new apartment.

last week we signed a 2 year lease on our new place.

it's the 2nd floor of a private house, 4 blocks down from where we are currently residing. i really would have liked to get out of this neighborhood, however - a. it's one of the few remaining brooklyn neighborhoods that's safe and affordable, b. it's easy for me to get to school from here and i don't want to deal with transferring, and c. elly didn't get a spot in CSI daycare [waiting list]. this is the best location for easy babysitting access for family/friends.

i'm really uncomfortable with planning ahead, but the "plan" is to stay at the new place for 4 years. at that point our relocation options will open up greatly as we'll have 2 incomes to work with.

the apartment was put on the market as a 3 bedroom. in reality, the owners cut of a piece of the living room to create a closet sized third "bedroom" just large enough to fit a desk and a twin size bed. we weren't planning to take the apartment until it occurred to me that the living room/dining room space is big enough to accommodate a split for another [small-ish] bedroom.

we're going to make the dining room/living room space into living room only in order to create a partition for another bedroom. there's no way to put up doors without serious renovations so we are going to use heavy draperies instead. the closet sized bedroom will be made into a studio for ian. the tiny kitchenette doesn't have room for a table so the plan is to put up a bar, get a few bar stools, and have an eat-in kitchen. a VERY small eat-in kitchen.

i don't like: entrance directly into the living room, 2 of the bedrooms having carpeting, one of the bedrooms doesn't have a closet, closet space is limited period, tiny kitchen/bathroom.

i love: beautiful large living room space, parquet floors, lots of big windows, sunlight in every room, high ceilings, straight walls, renovated bathroom, [generic but] clean kitchen, pet-friendly owners, $1,750 a month.

we are downgrading to a roommate. it's the only way we can afford a separate bedroom for eloise. our friend erica will be staying with us for a while. on the bright side, i really like erica and we are planning to brew beer and make pickles together.

there's so much to do in the next few weeks.
