for enerirenie.

She turns from the futon with an outstretched hand to slide the door open. The first thing she sees in the half-light are his eyes. He has one arm behind his head, his body turned to her, the comforter carelessly pushed aside. A lazy smile spreads over his face as the door opens wider.

"Good morning," he says softly, in a voice still heavy from slumber.

"Good morning," she echoes, with a smile of her own. There are things in this world that no one can predict: the choices people make; the direction their hearts take. And then there are things like these: a smile in Ryo's half-lidded eyes, a look that tells her that he's been waiting for her, yesterday, today, for all of his life. There are no words for these; these are her absolute certainties.

Everything that matters to Erika is enclosed in this little space-- her father's picture, the small amount of money, buried in the flowerpot, their meagre belongings, and Nishikido Ryo.

On the other hand, everything that matters to Ryo can be tucked into a safe little corner-- provided that she stayed there. Only Erika matters. Nothing else is as important.

"You and I can just stay here," he says as she clears the table of breakfast. "We have food, we have water, we have each other."

She cast him an absurd look. "What a joke," she says. "You need to work and I need to study. Besides, what if the food and water run out? What then?"

The look in his eyes had her stopping short. "Just for today," he began, "just for today, let's bar the doors, lock all the windows. Let's create our own world-- a world that won't let the outside in."

"What?"

He wasn't looking at her. "Everything gets complicated when we let the real world in," he said softly.

Silence followed-- ringing in his ears. Then he heard a final little snap of a window closing. When he looked up, she was smiling.

"Our own little world," she murmured. "I'd like that."

And in their own world, the first thing he tells her is this: "I love you, you know. I'll love you forever."

She knows, somehow, that when he says things like that-- when he says he'll love her forever, that he means it, that his love will endure. She can see it, her whole life ahead of her, and in her death, and when she is reborn. Ryo's love is there. She knows because her heart recognizes his. Her heart echoes the same emotion.

***

Four walls won't keep the real world away, but two desperate hearts can, with a little imagination. In this world they have created, they have no one to cling to but each other.

"We can't deny it forever," she tells him. "Outside that door we have other lives, other responsibilities."

"I've always wondered," he says, "what it would be like to lie in your arms for an entire afternoon. Can I do that?"

And she lets him. He settles between her legs, with her arms wrapped around him, his head on her shoulder. He points out the clouds that pass by the high window, points out the blue of the sky. He points out the square of sunlight they're sitting in; he points out her hopes and her dreams and exposes her one real fear. His weight is warm and it comforts her. In the little square of sun they sit and they breathe. In it they cannot be harmed.

The one thing she fears is to not find him by her.

***

On the other side of the door it's her silhouette that he sees, profiled against a glaring light as she pins up her hair. He touches the door, pulls back, finally just slides it open. She looks up, startled-- he ignores that, he kneels instead, and takes a kiss. She doesn't resist. This, for now, he is allowed.

***

As night falls she can hear his breath begin to deepen. The arm he has around her grows heavier, and his lips touch the back of her neck in a never-ending kiss. Somewhere beyond this day, there were dangers ahead. There were things that would come that neither of them would be able to control. Slowly, she closes her eyes from the dark and settles into him. He holds her tighter, as if wanting to take her inside him.

The real world is out there, somewhere, and it could wait until tomorrow.
