Okay, I have no coherence. Will commentfic do to show the extent of my love? :hopeful:
When there is a frantic knock at the door, Tegoshi's first instinct is to scramble off the bed and duck and cover. Massu's first instinct is to groan sleepily--and answer the door.
"...Aiko-chan?" Massu asks incredulously, blinking at the sight of the oldest Nishikido child, fist raised in mid-knock and backpack laying at her feet, filled to the brim. He furrows his eyebrows and idly wonders whether he should stop sneaking those midnight gyoza snacks every now and again.
"Massu-jichan!" Aiko wails, leaping into her uncle's strong arms. When Tegoshi finally comes down the stairs, with a blanket wrapped tightly over his shoulders, all he can do is blink. He idly wonders if he should stop sneaking some of Massu's "secret" gyoza at odd hours of the night. When he finally realizes that Aiko is not a hallucination, Tegoshi's first instinct is worry.
"Did something happen, Ai-chan?" he asks as soothingly as possible, though he can't help the rising feeling of panic at the sight of Ryo's eldest daughter currently sobbing in Massu's arms. He shoots a worried look at Massu, who shrugs helplessly in response, patting Aiko on the back as gently as he can manage.
"Is your dad okay?" Tegoshi tries, coming over to place a hand on the girl's shoulders. At this question Aiko whips her head towards Tegoshi and wrinkles her nose, a full-blown pout on her face.
"No. Daddy is a stingy and mean," Aiko sniffs dramatically, stepping away from Massu's embrace and crossing her arms over her chest.
"Well, the kid had to learn the truth some time," Massu yawns. Tegoshi furrows his eyebrows and elbows him in the side, while Aiko fails to control her giggles.
"Then what brings you here so late at night, Ai-chan? Isn't it past your bedtime?" Tegoshi reprimands gently. Aiko sticks out her bottom lip.
"I'm running away from home."
"Well all right then," Massu replies genially, stepping out to bring Aiko's forgotten backpack in from the cold. Tegoshi shoots him a look.
"Massu. Shouldn't we be questioning why she's running away from home?" Tegoshi demands, hands on his hips. Massu shrugs.
"It's cold and late. Shouldn't we worry about getting warmed up first? It's a long way from Osaka, you know."
"...Tegoshi-jichan?" Aiko asks--in such a helpless voice that Tegoshi suspects she could not have inherited from either of her parents--before turning her big, shining eyes on him and Tegoshi's suspicions are suddenly confirmed. He invented that look. Foiled by his own genius! With a resigned sigh, he drapes his blanket over Aiko's smaller frame.
"All right," Tegoshi grouches, "but we're going to have to talk about this eventually."
Aiko cheers and Massu grins, heading for the kitchen, "This calls for Massu-jichan's infamous hot chocolate!"
"You mean Massu-jichan's "infamous hot chocolate" that is really just hot water he pours into someone else's "infamous hot chocolate" mix?" Tegoshi asks, raising an amused eyebrow, as he and Aiko follow after.
"Exactly," Massu replies, wiggling his eyebrows and grinning mischievously. Tegoshi finds all he can do to shake his head and laugh.
It's surprisingly Massu that wheedles the reason behind Aiko's sudden decision to run away from home from her, although it's really just an elaboration on the fact that her father is stingy and mean and all the similar variations of the words. But it's also Massu that finally persuades Aiko to "run back home"--and the three of them finally set off towards the Nishikido household, Aiko's backpack slung lazily over Massu's shoulder, and her hands enveloped by theirs tightly.
It's when Aiko is sandwiched between the two on the train bound for Osaka, with her head resting against Tegoshi's arm and her eyes fluttering in vain to stay awake that Aiko mutters sleepily, "Massu-jichan and Tegoshi-jichan would make good dads. Not stingy...chocolate...nn..."
Massu smiles fondly and pats her on the head as her breathing slows and steadies. Tegoshi fixes her hair, replacing a loose strand behind her ear with his thumb.
Later, after they've dropped Aiko off to her family and they're back on the train, Tegoshi gives Massu a sidelong glance.
"What is it?" Massu asks, feeling Tegoshi's eyes on him
"I think Ai-chan is right. Massu would make a really good dad," Tegoshi declares simply. Massu grins.
"Thanks. You too," Massu pauses. "Though you'd be more of a mother, right?"
"...You know, that joke is getting really old, really fast."
