So apparently the average lifespan of an American Newt is 3 years, and the average lifespan of a Firebelly Newt is 20+ in captivity.

And y'know, I kinda wish I'd known that when I got the little guy 20 years ago. That was probably more of a commitment than I was willing to make at the time. >.

Reptiles and amphibians can be surprisingly sturdy! The leopard gecko my sister and I got in elementary school lived at least until I'd started college, I think, and that was still on the shorter end of the average captive leopard gecko lifespan.

I wish I'd known when I got the thing that I was committing to two decades of care. I mean in those days the average pet lived about 2 months (goldfish) so I really had no concept that I'd be dragging this thing all over the place throughout my adulthood.

It's a bit weird.

Somewhat to my chagrin, yup. I got it when I was a kid, and though many other pets (and some family members) have come and gone, this little dude has chugged along. I even left the country for two years and when I came back, he (or she?) was still going strong.

I kinda want to rehome it but I don't think there's an amphibian rescue organization anywhere in the states. Alas.

Lordy. That is somewhat extraordinary.

My freshman year of college my mother got a puppy, and like six months later she called me in a panic: "I just realized this dog may very well one day meet your child!"
