the coolest thing that's happened in a long while

OMG so I was at the park today, which is the first Wednesday of the month, which is when they test the tornado sirens. I was coming around a bend in the trail at 12:00 and the siren went off, and as soon as it wound down all around me I heard yipping, yammering, and HOWLING.

It quickly became so loud that the best word I can use to describe it is 'clamor.' Or maybe 'din.' A near-deafening din of howling, drowning out all other noise, surrounding me. And I couldn't see anything, not a single ear or a furry back. I could hear the tiny yips of puppies and the louder voices of older canids. It sounded like there were twenty of them out there, though I doubt it was that many. But there were a lot of them.

I knew that some of the Ohio parks have coyotes, though I'd never seen hide nor hair of one in all the years I've been hanging around them. But I hoofed it back to the nature center and asked, and was told yes, they have several coyotes (also foxes, but they don't howl and I've at least heard them at night). Another visitor to the park said she'd been there when the 12:00 siren went off in the past and they howled where she was too. The staff guy said it's the frequency of the siren, which is the same as their howl.

HOW COOL IS THAT? I mean I see deer frequently, and I saw some today. But I've never seen a wild coyote and now I really really want to.

rl, nature is crazy
