“So, Jaejoong… you’re a boy aren’t you?”
What kind of retarded question is that?
“No, Yunho, I’m a transvestite.” I gladly announced, my voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Fine, fine… Since you’re a boy, you won’t know what girls mostly like, will you?” He inquired slowly and I slowly saw where he was coming from.
Eyeing him suspiciously from the corner of my eye, I ironed my voice into a small hiss, “Does this have something got to do with Seul Gi?” He immediately grinned broadly like an idiot, “Yes, you’re so extremely quick-witted and ingenious!” Yeah, as if he meant that.
“Okay, are you done with sucking up?” I rolled my eyes impatiently at him.
“Fine, I want you to help me with my letter. I’m going to confess to her by giving her a love letter and hopefully she’ll reply!” He said goofily. That guy is stuck up in lala-land all the time or something. “Will Kim Jaejoong, the dazzling gorgeous beauty and the only manifestation of brilliance, please help me write my love letter and then pass it to Seul Gi?”
His means of pleasing, although ridiculous, was after all somewhat heart-warming. A small smile hung on the corner of my lips although I tried desperately to conceal my merriment. I took a moment to consider carefully, weighing my options. “Well, okay, I’ll help you pass the letter. But I won’t help you write it.” Yunho’s previous arisen joy was suck by my refusal.
Just as he was about to beg me the second time round, I interjected in mid sentence, “Girls like boys to be sincere so you shouldn’t ask for help especially when it comes to writing love letters.”
“She won’t-”
I interrupted again, “She will know if I tell her.”
I knew Yunho was silently cursing me in his mind, I could tell since I always did that to him. Yet I gave him a satisfied beam and sauntered away so I wouldn’t see his goofy face every time I turned to my right.
Once we entered my small apartment where I resided in with my beloved parents who were away at work currently, Yunho slumped sluggishly down my couch, as if he was right at home. Seems like he was in his comfort zone everywhere he went. “I’m starved!”
“I have… bread.” I replied nervously. My family never had the habit of buying junk food or any snacks to munch on other than the food to be prepared for proper mealtimes. “Bread?” He asked in in-credulousness, staring straight at me in the eye, “You don’t have instant noodles even?”
“Er… Yes we have instant noodles.”
“Go, host! Go cook your hungry guest some!” He urged, flashing me his stupid trademark topside grin, which he assumed every girl and boy, swooned over. Assumed.
“I don’t know how to cook…” I muttered to myself, not even daring to open my mouth to pronounce accurately. “What did you say?” Yunho frowned, straining his ears. “Forget it Yunho! I’ll get you plain bread!” I stomped into the kitchen, grabbing the bread loaf. Yunho followed with a puzzled expression. “What’s the matter?”
Embarrassed, I shoved the bread under his nose. I wasn’t about to let Yunho know about how I had never gone close to he stove before, not even mentioning learning to switch the fire on. I was firstly, extremely timorous and afraid of even a small flame. Secondly, I could not be bothered to step into the kitchen since my loving parents always had breakfast and dinner ready whenever I felt a teeny bit hungry. I’m extremely blessed aren’t I? “Instant noodles!” He whined like a little kid. I had to admit he looked kind of cute, yet the noises he was making were horrifying sickening.
“I’m not going to waste my time on you!”
“C’mon! I think you would rather waste a few minutes with instant noodles than to listen to me whine all day,” He pointed out a fair argument. I stared hard at the empty stove and swallowed.
“There’s something wrong,” Yunho followed my gaze. “Do you even know how to cook?”
“Awww, I’m so famished!”
And he complained for the whole day we were working on the assignment! To think he actually refused plain bread! Stupid Yunho. He gets on my nerves.
The Present (2009)
“Awww, I’m so famished!”
Junsu’s voice penetrated my ears and woke me up from my temporary trance. The staff room door closed behind him as he plopped down on desk beside mine. “Jaejoong, you going for lunch?”
“Huh? Er, no… I’ve got tons of worksheets to handle,” I rejected, pointing to the thick stacks of assignments with my pen. He nodded, “I’m meeting Yoochun.”
I was taken aback, “Oh? Since when were you so close to him?” Somehow I already knew the answer. Since Yunho’s death and since my heart lived in reclusion and decided not to enter reality again. Junsu, my best friend since College, shrugged nonchalantly, “He’s your best friend after all.” He was right, Yoochun used to be my best friend in High School and he knew Yunho well, but never really liked him. Well, I did not have a wonderful impression of Yunho in the first place either. Love does change everything, doesn’t it?
“Okay, I’ll be going then, Jaejoong…” He winked before jogging off, the rhythmic sound of his sneakers fading off as he travelled further.
Sighing, I retreated to my huge pile of worksheets, lugging myself through the painful process of doing every single assignment.
The telephone started ringing at the most inappropriate time, just when I was submerged into a particular challenging question and searching for an answer. Placing my pen down, I picked it up, slightly irritated at the untimely phone call. Phone calls were somehow always untimely weren’t they?
“Hello? Kim Jaejoong’s speaking.” I answered with almost monotony.
“Jaejoong? This is your brother’s wife.” The familiar female voice at the other end replied, “I just got discharged from the hospital. Would you care to join me for lunch?”
