This is for mews1945, who needs some extra love today. *hugs tight*

Title: A Bird in the Hand
Pairing: C/Z
Rating: PG
Synopsis: Fulla-fluff... Zeke shares a sweet discovery.

Normally, Zeke couldn’t have cared less for such a thing. He wasn’t one to coo and gush over things, especially little, cutesy animals. If he’d been alone, he would’ve shrugged and kept picking up his tools from working on the car the night before.

But he wasn’t alone. Casey was inside, getting dressed and ready to go out for breakfast. After passing by the bushes along the house and hearing light, almost inaudible squeaks coming from inside of it, Zeke had looked past the branches and discovered that it wasn’t just he and Casey who needed to eat.

“Ready… where to?”

Casey’s sudden appearance at the side door of the house almost made Zeke jump. He straightened and smiled. “I dunno… you gotta see something first.”

“Um… ‘kay?”

“Get your camera.”

“But--what’s going on?” Casey asked.

“Just do as I say. You won’t regret it.”

“A’right,” Casey mumbled. “Better be good, holding up my breakfast like this.”

Zeke didn’t reply. He lit up a cigarette and looked back to the bush, smiling wide. While Casey was inside, he made a quick check--yup, still there.

“Okay. What?” Casey asked, coming out again, this time with his camera.

“Over here,” Zeke said, motioning to the bush.

“Uh… a bush?”

“Shut up and get over here,” Zeke commanded. He pushed aside the branches; Casey shuffled over and looked inside.

“Oh!” he exclaimed.

“There, y’see? Ungrateful jerk,” Zeke said.

Casey stayed quiet, his face full of awe and wonder. He lifted his camera up halfway then stopped. It seemed that he couldn’t stop staring… “I don’t know if I’ve ever… seen this sorta thing before.”

“Me neither,” Zeke said. He then moved closer, his face almost plastered to Casey’s to look at the four baby birds, heads raised and stretched as far as their necks would allow in an obvious plea for food. Glancing to Casey, Zeke smiled warmly. He would have preferred to stare at the boy--his wide-eyed, sweet boy, who looked overcome with happiness if his bright smile said anything. But… “We should probably motor. I don’t feel like dealing with an angry mother bird, and I feel like we’re taunting the poor things already.”

“Let me just…” Casey murmured. He finally took the camera to his expert-eye and snapped away; the flash was off, most likely set that way as to not startle the little creatures. The sun was shining bright enough, making the inside of the bush look downright holy. After three snapshots, Casey stepped back. “That… was awesome.”

“Yea,” Zeke replied. He let the branches go in a gentle swoop, back into place to hide the nest.

“Thank you,” Casey then murmured, his smile gone from wide and excited to soft and sweet. “That was better than anything they serve at the IHOP.”

Zeke chuckled and went to the driver’s side of the GTO. “Even the caramel-apple pancake dish you practically breathe in?” he joked.

Casey said nothing. He took the two-step distance to Zeke, placed a gentle hand to his cheek then brought the young man’s lips to his own. The kiss was slow, melting over Zeke’s mouth as if Casey had become warm chocolate. Sun-kissed candy, always tasting sweet and heavenly.

“You’re beautiful,” Casey murmured after making one last press of his lips into Zeke’s and moving away.

No one had ever called him that; Zeke had to smile and turn away to hide the instantaneous misting of his eyes. “C’mon… pancake time,” he muttered. He got into the car and watched Casey practically skip around the hood to the passenger side. Zeke clenched the wheel in his hands and gritted his teeth.

He figured that he wouldn’t make it past his first cup of coffee without blurting, “I love you, y’know,” for the first time--and it was about time he did.
