This morning I was listening to CBC radio 1 while doing my chores. There was a blurb about the fact that after the tsunami struck last Christmas more than 200,000 people were killed and Canadians raised $200,000,000 in support of the relief effort. the country has a max & min amount it gives to charity per year. the tsumani absolutely trashed the united-way campaign because everyon'e givien their $100. this is the 5th catastophy in recent memory so it's not surprising, yet depressing.

The country may but private citizens and groups like the red cross which are NGOs don't. I agree that Canada may have topped out on how much the government could match though.

I think your second point is way closer to the mark - people are charitied-out. There's just so much that's been going on, and only limited resources people feel required to give to charity.

oh yeah, i meant "the country" as in "the people", i don't really think about the govornment too much normally, they are more or less just like "the cost of living" to me.

oooh.. I get it. Yeah, people top out mentally, that's for sure. I give at my work. If people put something down in the kitchen raising money for whatever, I do it. Other than that though, there are few things I give to if solicited any other way. I give to the World Wildlife Federation sometimes by mail or by buying something online.
