Today was a lovely day at the beach; overcast yet not raining, sufficiently windy yet not chilly, the conditions were marvelous. While in the water, strange slimy quasi-solids kept worming their ways into our hands, around our legs, under our feet, defying all attempts to be brought to light and acting with impunity from the murky shallows. So the mystery remained. Jellyfish? Giant shrimps? Or something more sinister?

Several hours later, we spotted dolphins a hundred feet away which is always a welcome sight but nothing horridly out of the ordinary for the area. The pelicans began to circle overhead most menacingly, vulturing their way in lazy loops across the sky-...

When all of a sudden there was an enormous explosion and dozens of wriggling little fishes were blasted out of the water in a most elegant fleur-de-lis, signaling the birds to plummet downwards and spear one of the unfortunates. It seems the dolphins were corralling the school and with a burst of unchecked vigor, knocking them heavenwards to the mercy of those above. Those wise enough to stray away from the stupider fishes were attempting taking refuge in our hands and bathing suits, deriving security from our commanding simian presence. For two or three minutes, the horizon was peppered with these bursts of bodies and the swooping pelicans. It was incredible.

I finally feel like I understand the simile "like frogs in a dynamite pond."
