character name; Hans Fahrling / Shan Rhiflang (referred to as Deus to reduce confusion)
fandom; original.
canon or alternate universe;
canon point;
species; homunculus / demi-god.
age; two three years, appears in his early twenties.
room; 302.
appearance; Deus stands at an average 5'8", with ear-length brown hair, and eyes that are red (Shan) or violet (Hans) depending on the persona. Physically, Deus is slim and fairly wiry - despite not being very muscle-y, he makes up for it in his confident stance. His sense of fashion is a bit 'off', as he thought a bright yellow t-shirt under a long blue trench coat was actually acceptable, possibly even trendy. Ever since, he's been taught a thing or two about color coordination, even if he picks out some strange combinations now and then.

At almost all times, Deus wears a glove on one of his hands (which one varies, depending on the persona) and generally keeps to long shirts and pants in order to hide his birthmarks: that of a dragon's head beginning at the back of his hand, curled around his arm, with the tail ending above his belly-button; and one along the opposite leg, with the tail lining up with his pinky toe, curled up around his leg, with the mouth of the dragon ending mere inches from where the tail of the other dragon begins.

His PB is Itsuki Koizumi from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, albeit Deus is physically older than Itsuki. Uhhh, use your imagination?

background; In the beginning, there was the Ferrier, a mindless soul completely designated to guiding the lost or travelers through the darkness of the dimensions. This Ferrier was once human, but became lost once his life ended, and was spared an eternal hell of a single soul wandering endless dimensions without properly faceting and never reaching its end-point. What this soul's original name was is so lost that even time could not tell you what it was.

Countless millennia passed while the Ferrier did its duty, in the relative peace of the boundless Space. However, a greedy old man who dwelt within one of the pillar dimensions, Atria, broke an irrefutable law: the mortal created life, an entire soul, on the foundations of the dead. While the higher gods were unable to directly interfere (and, in fact, were mostly busy with their own feudal war), the sisters of fate began to spin their thread, ensuring karma would reach the lawbreaker sooner or later. In the meantime, the matter of the created soul was undecided. The power of a single soul was greater than most beings realized; if a being was made out of several souls, the strength would be more than the soul could handle. It seemed the old man realized this on his own, for he had implanted a failsafe and made his own body a seal for his creation's power. The creation's name, as it turned out, was Aoi Kioku, and had been adopted as a replacement for the man's lost love (now becoming his daughter). An argument was made that the girl, being artificial, should simply be destroyed in order to free the souls entrapped in her. The proposition was shot down, with the grounds being that she couldn't be completely artificial if created using 'natural' ingredients.

For fourteen years, the fate of the girl named Aoi remained undecided. On her fifteenth birthday, the old man's string was finally cut... killing him, and breaking the seal on the girl's power. The pantheon was forced to act. Either free the souls within Aoi before they broke loose and wreaked havoc on her dimension, or place a new seal on her that would effectively cripple her mind and body for however much longer she would live.

The god of the Space, Yora, took a third option.

Working quickly, Yora took his minion, the Ferrier, and molded it into an homunculus; an artificial, but stable body. The Ferrier was then given personality and a name. Unfortunately, while the body itself was in no danger of collapse, the Ferrier's extreme exposure to the Space had made him highly susceptible to alteration depending on the different energies created by the dimensions. This resulted in the two extremes of his original personality: the friendly, mute, violet-eyed Hans, and the loud-mouthed, deaf and red-eyed Shan. While this development was a setback, Yora continued with his plans and sent his creation into Aoi's dimension to act a proxy seal and guardian, only a day after her 'grandfather' died. Hans, the dominant persona in Atria, became fast friends with Aoi and assisted her in finding a new place to call home. (He has yet to tell her of his true purpose in guarding over her is, despite her occasional curiosity on the matter.)

While Hans' role as seal was enough to appease the pantheon, he was unable to completely suppress Aoi's growing power. Instead of trying to forestall the inevitable, he encouraged her to use her abilities to earn a living. They both settled on a mercenary/jack-of-all-trades operation where they could put their unique talents through all sorts of challenges, which is what they still do two years later. The Ferrier continues his duties, but now with added attitude, and increased threat of interdimensional beings trying to claim his charge as their own.

Each day is an adventure, and Deus is never one to turn it down.

psychology; Whether he be in the persona of Hans or the persona of Shan, Deus has a compassionate core. What else could it be when, both as the Ferrier and the homunculus, his purpose is to meet the needs of others? While the added insult of a personality has obscured, and possibly even tainted it, it would take something like the dimensions collapsing to change this fact. Deus also happens to share an amusement directed at any of the mortal species in general; sure, he possesses an innate 'understanding' of many cultures, but that doesn't mean he has to take it seriously. Likewise, he finds the civil war of the higher gods to be a waste of time, despite his 'mother' being among that pantheon.

In his time as the nameless soul called the Ferrier, Deus has forgotten much of what it means to truly be human. As such, his view on the death of others is very callous. Why be sad, when there's another version of that person elsewhere in the Space, and they'll end up reincarnated anyway? Of course, having expressed such a view to Aoi before, he's since learned it might be better to keep his mouth shut on the matter. Not that he actually does, most of the time. He just knows it's not an easy subject to broach.

As Hans, he is utterly mute. This is the persona he dons most often due to his position in Atria. Most of the time, he's content to sit in the background and allow things to happen. Friendly and thoughtful, Hans makes an excellent confidant - after all, it's not like he's going to tell anyone. He's slow to anger, but quick to judge others by whatever actions they allow themselves to be ruled by. Just about the only things you don't want to do around him would be to threaten Aoi, his father, or try to manipulate the Darkness. If he finds you doing any of that, he will kick your ass.

As Shan, he is utterly deaf. Despite spending less time in this persona, he's very comfortable in it. Shan is the type to either offer a helping hand if he thinks someone might need it, or laugh at them for being unable to figure out their own problems when the solution seems obvious. Humorous, talkative and a bit abrasive, he's the kind of friend who might hang around even if you don't really want him there in the first place. He has a phobia of being lost in crowds while not being able to hear anything, but if asked later on, he would most definitely brush any such accusation off. His irritation is easy to spark, because he has a bad habit of nitpicking or thinking people are just being obtuse if they claim not to understand something, showing himself to be much more cynical than his other persona.

All in all, the homunculus' sense of duty is unwavering. Deus will guard Aoi 'til his dying breath, and possibly even further than that. He has very little problem with responding to violence in kind. His loyalty to his father is one of his strengths and largest weakness - due to Yora's nature of balance between humanity's opposing morals, when Yora is within a darker stage, Deus' own personality twists to match. He becomes less prone to help people, and more likely to sit back and watch things unfold; more likely to cause a little chaos than to set it right. His core remains the same, but the taint of humanity's darker emotions becomes much more evident.

reality description; The 'reality' which Deus hails from is made up of a multitude of different dimensions, all gathered in a place called the Space. (Which, as you might guess, appears very similar to outer space, only with air and livable temperatures.) Of these dimensions, a handful are called pillars, because their essence stabilizes the dimensions around them on only the virtue of their being. If something were to happen to these pillar dimensions, large pieces of the Space could very easily collapse and set off a chain reaction.

Within the Space, a single soul becomes faceted, creating 'alternate' selves scattered throughout the different dimensions. These alternates may be radically different from each other in personality, but still remain the same person at their core. No soul is present in every dimension, but throughout its journey, it will eventually visit them all. When a piece of a soul finishes its journey, it is welcomed into the outer world, where it will wait for the rest of itself to join it. Some unlucky souls, however, become lost in their transition between the Space and the outer world - these souls are then doomed to continue their wandering, forever seeking an exit, while losing what made them capable to leave in the first place. These souls eventually become nothing more than phantoms, devoid of anything but their search. The Ferrier was one such soul that Yora took pity on.

Guarding the Space is the one who created Deus (his father, if you will), the lower pantheon god named Yora. Deus was created in the image of an older-looking Yora, with slightly less-creepy coloring. Yora's responsibilities lie in making sure the dimensions are properly supported, and allowing souls access to either reincarnation, or entrance to the world outside of the Space, where most of the other gods reside. Ario, a goddess of the higher pantheon in control of time, is Yora's wife. (She's also considered to be Deus' mother, though she had no hand in making him.) While Yora himself is not evil, he is influenced by the energies of the Space, constantly being a polarizing effect on the souls inside to prevent complacency, meaning that when the energies are generally at peace, he becomes chaotic, and vis versa. In a previous time of extreme peace, Yora was driven insane by the overwhelming unstable energies he had produced, and eventually managed to cast off bits and pieces of this madness, creating an entity called the Darkness. It has since been gathered up and imprisoned, but it has a nasty habit of escaping and causing havoc in various dimensions.

In this reality, many attributes have a single god to preside over them; only the gods of the Compass have more than one attribute. Of all these gods, many in the higher pantheon are embroiled in a civil war, leaving a large number of their neglected duties to be picked up by their subordinates in the lower pantheon, which results in an undertone of discord among... well, just about everything. Deus tends to refer to all of the gods as his aunts and uncles, due to his strange relation to all of them. Opinions on the strange demi-god vary, but he gets long best with the Compass gods, seeing as his mother is already very good friends with them.

Atria is the dimension where Aoi Kioku, his charge, lives, and so he spends much of his time there as Hans Fahrling. Atria is in a world very similar to early 20th century England, with a few differences in their advancement (fashion definitely being one), mostly due to the presence of advanced magickal studies. Not everyone has the capability to use this magic, and their strength varies from user to user. Those with a naturally strong will tend to have close affinity to the magic, and many choose to specialize their studies to become even more proficient.

(As an aside, much of this reality is being borrowed from my friend Sono, with permission. She has some of the information up at Kukidist Wiki, although some of it is altered to better fit Deus' creation.)

powers / abilities; Being an artificially created person (and holding the status of 'demi-god') gives Deus a lot of advantages, such as enhanced reflexes and above average senses. Seeing as his soul is nearly independent of his body, Deus is able to alter it in a variety of ways, such as sharpening his arm into a blade, stretching his arm out to reach further, or increasing density in order to withstand a blow. Not that he would really need that last one, since he can take a hell of a beating and still keep on ticking. Outright killing him is a bit of a tricky thing, as his 'father' is the one to grant souls their access to reincarnation - it's possible Yora may just refuse to let Deus' soul be taken, and allow him to heal from whatever mortal wounds he might have. Sleep is almost optional, either taken to help speed up injury recovery, a way to pass time, or just a regular cycle of fourteen hours every week or so. One thing Deus cannot do, however, is copy the voice or body of another person. Whether the limitation be physical or psychological, he just can't do it.

His time in Atria has given him time to learn of its magic; his particular affinity is that of natural materials (wood, metal, stone), allowing him to control it and manipulate its structure. He is also adept at many different types of armed or unarmed combat.

As Hans, to make up for his muteness, he knows a variety of sign languages to communicate with. As Shan, to make up for his deafness, he can read lips.

His role as the Ferrier also gives him the ability to access the Space anytime, anywhere, in order to traverse the dimensions as necessary. This ability doesn't work in Cicero, but he occasionally tries it every now and then, anyway.
