Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond - “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” [YouTube]
This is the show-stopping performance by Barbra Streisand and Neil Diamond at the 1980 Grammys.
I first heard the song “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” on WOSO radio in Puerto Rico one night when I was 14 with my mother in the car. She immediately exclaimed that it was her favorite song for her and Dad. It was the first time she had ever shared anything about her and Dad’s romance. It was also kind of bittersweet, as this was also a time when their romance had died down, being consumed by work and family.
I saw the Grammy performance years later on one of those VH1 shows on memorable Grammy performances, as it was an unscheduled performance, and the chemistry you saw on stage between them was electrifying.
You Don’t Bring Me Flowers
Barbra Streisand & Neil Diamond
- written by Neil Diamond, Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman
You don’t bring me flowers
You don’t sing me love songs
You hardly talk to me anymore
When you come through the door
At the end of the day
I remember when
You couldn’t wait to love me
Used to hate to leave me
Now after lovin’ me late at night
When it’s good for you
And you’re feeling alright
Well you just roll over
And you turn out the light
And you don’t bring me flowers anymore
It used to be so natural
To talk about forever
But ‘used to be’s’ don’t count anymore
They just lay on the floor
‘Til we sweep them away
And baby, I remember
All the things you taught me
I learned how to laugh
And I learned how to cry
Well I learned how to love
Even learned how to lie
You’d think I could learn
How to tell you goodbye
‘Cause you don’t bring me flowers anymore
