"Of course." In his bed, Severus was also reading, but glanced down at the foot of the bed when Remus spoke. "Are you chilled?"

"A little," Remus admitted. "Aren't you? It's gotten cold out, lately..."

Reaching for his wand, Severus started a fire in the fireplace, paused, and then cast a warming charm on Remus' blanket. "That should help."

"Thank you." Remus smiled wanly. "I keep feeling like my leaves are going to turn and fall off... Winter will be odd."

"This isn't your first winter," Severus said quietly. They'd met before the previous winter, but during some of those months, they hadn't been talking either.

"I wasn't paying attention to the weather quite as much, then." He shrugged slightly. "I don't think any of us really were."

"Was something distracting you?" Severus marked his place in his book.

[homolupinus]

"Any number of things. Fights, making up. That, and it's a bit more temperate in Heaven, I think... Didn't really have seasons there. I didn't like that, much, it was sort of bland." He toyed with with a stray thread on the bedspread. "Can I come sit with you?"

"Is it warmer now?" There was certainly enough space for Remus to come sit on the bed with him, his previous side of the bed was untouched, even by Severus.

"Yes, it's fine. I'm not using you for your body heat, don't worry..." He trailed off, and looked down. "If you don't want me to, that's fine. I was thinking of sleeping soon, anyways."

"It makes no nevermind to me," Severus said and leaned against his pillows, the pale flesh of his shoulders visible just above where he had the covers pulled up.

Remus quickly squashed the brief surge of hope that welled up, for fear of overstepping some invisible boundary. "Actually, I should probably just stay here, since I'm sleepy..." He allowed himself one last lingering, starved glance, then curled back up on his mat. "Goodnight, Severus."

"Why ask if you do not intend to follow through?"

"If I fell asleep up there, you'd... I mean... it's probably best I stay here..."

[faustian_prince]

"Are you actually concerned with the consequences of falling asleep where I don't want you?" Severus purred.

"Yes," Remus mumbled, sighing softly.
