How can you think that's a good idea?

Yeah, I don't think I'll be seeing the Watchmen movie now. Pay close attention to the last few paragraphs with the extreme metaphors involving various acts of physical abuse and the Sally comment (you do need to know who Sally is and know about the near rape she experiences to understand the full weight of that particular statement). Come to think ( Read more... )

Well, it sounds like maybe you weren't too gung-ho on seeing it to begin with, buuut... I dunno. I don't think you should let the poorly-chosen metaphor of David Hayter affect you one way or another. His letter isn't the movie.

Alternate theory: The offensive wording referenced also takes place in the part of the letter where A) he assumes he is addressing those who hated the movie, and B) in a part where he said that the intent was to upset people, thus it's entirely possible he picked some of the more offensive imagery to do just that... and it worked. >_>

Still, I wouldn't put much stock in this thing. I do recommend experiencing the story one way or another, because it's worth the while, but yeah, the movie and novel are almost beat for beat going to be serving up the same stuff to you, so if general unpleasantry really isn't your thing, then I guess don't. :/

It wouldn't affect me one way or another except that I would be indirectly supporting him and his "cause" in this letter by seeing the movie by legal means.

And the alternate theory, yeah. I'm not seeing how he comes out any better. He's trolling in that way, AND it's trivializing. So I dunno, either way he's still an utter douchebag.

Brad, you told me you were going to bed. You lied to me. gero_jimbo March 13 2009, 10:42:25 UTC
That is true, but the same could be said of literally anyone who has a cause for someone to see that (or any) film.

I could be like "Hay Brad see Star Wars... why? Because incest is awesome. You've waited years for this director to totally incest you in the face. You may hate it, but you will want it like Luke wants it... 'it' being his OWN SISTER. OH BABY." That doesn't mean you seeing Star Wars after hearing me say that means you also support, buy into, or agree with this opinion. It means you saw a movie because you felt like it, and who cares what some wackjob/douche says about it. ;D

Yes, but you're not an integral part to the movie-making process of that film. Hayter was. Sure, there were other people involved, and they are probably less douchey than this. However, that does not excuse this horrible excuse for PR.

You could always wait until week three just to really kick him where it hurts.

I think I'm forgoing the watching regardless. My intuition is now telling me that I might possibly feel like I did during Sin City. I'd rather like to avoid a similar experience.

Plus, I don't exacting feel like validating Hayter's work now.
