I know this girl that just got married. I know this other girl who's getting married next week. Due to all the Facebook wedding drama I'm being subjected to, it's got me thinking about the misogyny of wedding ceremonies and how it will affect me some day.
1) I will probably take my husband's last name...because I don't like my own last name. I might hyphenate it, but only if it sounds really Badass and not like a cleaning product.
2) My dad will not give me away. My parents will give me away.
3) When we are being announced as a couple for the first time, no matter what our last name is, it will not be "Mr. and Mrs. His Name." It will be, "Mr. His and Mrs. My Name."
4) If there's something about the ceremony/reception that he wants, he can have it. I'm not going to be the boss just because I'm the bride - we're both important here. Any veto privileges I maintain will not be because I'm the bride, but because I have good taste.
5) You can bet your ass that if he is lifting up my dress and removing a garter from my leg in front of my whole family with his teeth (and that's a big "if"), then I am equally entitled to going up his pants and removing something from his leg with my teeth. It's only fair.
