Characters: L and Beyond Birthday
Setting/Location: Kitchen, Level IV
Date & Time: Day 3, morning
Warnings: None quite yet. A fraught relationship?
Summary: A meeting which couldn't be more wanted on one side, or less wanted on the other.

Now that several days had passed, L had almost become used to the weird sensation of being in constant motion. It wasn't that the ride in the caravan was bumpy -- it was that it was a little like being on a slower version of a smooth train, and trains had never agreed with him. The windows in his room helped, but his inner ear wouldn't let him forget that they were moving.

He slept in his bed for a few hours after Amaterasu's party, then woke up early and made his way to the kitchen, craving hot coffee and a pastry or three. It was an easy, dull routine, yet there was a tension in it for him. How much could he hide himself -- how much should he?

Ignoring B would be preferable, and in some ways easier, but in L's experience, B's attempts to gain his attention would probably escalate in a way that could be disastrous to both the progress of the caravan and L's personal comfort. It would therefore be necessary to confront him at some point. That he felt he had little choice rankled at L; it would give B what he wanted and L would receive no benefit in return.

The situation already involved a number of strange, undesirable factors. How many of his other ghosts might return to haunt him?

He chose the closer of the two kitchens, and got himself a cup of black coffee, hot and sweet. Lingering over a selection of pastries, he watched the door. It would be tiresome if the entire journey was an exercise in waiting for an assailant who might be standing around the corner.
