To say Sumire was lost would have been an understatement. Waking up in a strange new land that probably wasn't even on Earth was disorienting enough, but the fact she hadn't seen a single familiar face since leaving the room she had woken up in was especially discouraging. Still, she didn't want to sit around doing nothing, and she clutched that strange device - the Junogam - tightly as she walked out of the inn.

She spotted the young boy at the side of the road and overheard him say something about France. "Um, I'm pretty sure we're not in France," she said to him.

England raised his head and looked at her. "I know we're not in France." he stressed, "But it's probably his doing! He's probably round here somewhere right now." he blew out his cheeks with a huff, then regarded her more carefully.

"Who're you?"

"Oh, you're talking about a person named France," Sumire replied. "Sorry for misunderstanding." She briefly wondered why a parent would name their child after a country, but that was hardly the strangest thing she had heard here.

She sat down next to the boy. "My name's Sumire," she introduced herself, bowing her head slightly. "Did you just wake up here too?"

"No. France is France, but we're not in France, France is probably here though." he explained, poorly if he had thought about it, but such an idea was commonplace to him.

England watched the girl, she didn't looke like anyone he's ever met before. He got to his feet, purely because he was short enough already and didn't like that. "I'm England." he replied, then nodded.

She blinked at his explanation, not quite understanding it completely. She thought briefly of saying it might be fortunate if this "France" was here, as he would at least be somebody the boy already knew, but then thought better of it.

She smiled at him as he stood up, although surprise was still visible on her face when he introduced himself. "Ah, you're named after a country too?"

England blinked, then realised... Oh. Maybe she was Christian or something, people who followed that seemed to like to pretend they didn't exist. "No, I am England. I'm the country England." he frowned to try and think of how to make it clearer.

"A country? But you look just like a normal child." Although, she had to admit, she had never seen eyebrows that large on a person, nor seen a child carry a quiver of arrows on his back (she supposed they could've been realistic toys, though). She recognized his name, but never imagined a child to be England the country.

"I thought you'd be much older," she finally added. Then again, this might just had been a childish game, but to her, the boy almost seemed too mature for that.

"I'm a thousand years old!" he huffed, trying by some method to make himself look bigger. "... I think anyway... I'm not sure. I was around before Rome came, anyway." England fidgeted. "So... you're here against your will too?"

"Well, that's much older than me, at least." Sumire held back a laugh at England trying to look bigger - she still wasn't quite sure if she believed him, but she didn't want to hurt his feelings or be condescending toward him.

The mention of being here against her will, however, made her smile fade slightly and she clutched her Junogam tighter. "Yeah, that's true. I don't remember how I got here at all."

"Older than most people, except other countries." he shrugged his shoulder beneath the green cloak.

England nodded, "Me neither." he noticed her clutching the Junogam. "Umm..." he had hoped someone else might know how. "Maybe there's someone... that's supposed to talk to people isn't it?" he pointed at the machine. "Like writing a letter?"

Sumire thought about asking how long it took for countries to mature into adulthood, but she was worried that would sound rude. She was thankful she no longer had a reason to dwell on that question when England's attention was drawn to the Junogam.

"Oh, you mean the 'Junogam'?" she replied, hoping she was pronouncing that word right. "Yeah, you can use it to talk to other people," she said, pointing out the record button. "And also post messages; someone earlier posted something explaining a little bit of how we got here."

England stood on his toes to looked at it, then down to the ground where his own was sat. He scooped it up and found the same button she had pointed out. "So if I press this, then people will be able to hear me? Is it magic?"

He regarded it anew as she said that, turning it in his hands. He briefly considered trying to see what would happen if he hit it, but decided not to... for now anyway.

"Yeah, you press the circle when you want to start, and when you're done you press the square button here and it'll stop recording your voice," Sumire explained. "It's not magic, it's electricity. I don't quite understand how it works, but it's pretty simple to use."

She watched as he examined his device. "You don't have things like these where you come from?"

"I see." he said, nodding as if he got it. Or 'thought' that he got it, which was close enough for him. "I've never heard of electricity..." he clucked his tongue after he said the word, it sounded foreign. England looked back at her, "Thanks... Sumire." her name sounded foreign too actually.

"No." he shook his head.

"Huh, but England is a very well-developed--" She stopped herself mid-sentence and took another hard look at England's clothing. Somehow, things seemed to get even weirder, if such a thing was possible.

"England-kun, what year are you from?"

"The year of our Lord, 985 A.D." he sounded bored as he rattled it off. He didn't like have to say the 'Our Lord' part, but his kings insisted it was his Lord so England did it dutifully. "That's what the year is here... right?"
