Characters: Facing_Danger and specificities Setting/Location: Riviere, shortly after arriving Date & Time: Probably in the morning, Day 52 Warnings: --- Summary: Arthur's emotional and Face can't lie.
Arthur was frowning at the tear in his shirt sleeve from where Neil had bit him at the last town, plucking at the cloth before rolling up the fabric to form a pleat at the crook of his elbow, matching the other side. Damn. He couldn't tell why he was so irritated by it - he hadn't been the day it had happened, but he'd had other things on his mind at the time. Even Peck's voice was grating at him, but that might have been unfair.
"Yeah, I get it," he commented shortly, "We'll either be attacked, or we'll be bored." He smoothed out the wrinkles in his shirt before shaking his head, pulling on his suit jacket, easing his injured arm into it carefully. "I guess Hollywood's prepared you for that, though. Right?"
He walked past Peck to exit the room, glancing back briefly to see if the other man was following.
Face smiled his most trusting of smiles and prepared to offer one of his practiced stories about the rigors and challenges of a Hollywood talent agent. At least, that was his intention. All of his charm was there, but the words that left his mouth were far from the one he thought he was going speak, down to the last minute.
"Actually, I only get to spend time in Hollywood between jobs or if I manage to scam a place there. I'm not really a talent agent."
He stopped abruptly in his tracks, mortified by his own doing. What had he just said? And more pressing, had Arthur heard? He swallowed quickly, gave a nervous laugh and tried to save face. "Ah ha ha. Er, sorry about that. I don't know where that came from. What I really meant to say," He began again, smiling disarmingly and attempting to take the focus from his previous statement, "...is that I'm a wanted fugitive."
Arthur paused, gazing at Peck with some measure of measured confusion. Oh, he thought, then, I knew it. "So you lied the first time," he prompted, brow raising. Of course. No con man was about to drop his ruse the first time he's called out on it, but Arthur hadn't found it particularly pressing to know the truth when he knew it was a lie to begin with. He wasn't sure how to feel, at the moment - complacency in having known it was a lie, or rage at being conned in the first place.
"You really felt the need to lie in a place like this?" Arthur questioned instead, waving a hand around him.
"Well, I don't like to call it lying," That much was true at least, though Face really didn't appreciate the level of honesty that wanted to come out. "I mean, I've been doing it for most of my life. It's how I get what I want."
He frowned. "Look, uh, can you forgot about all that? I mean, it's not what I wanted to say..." There was going to be damage control as soon as the conman was able- that much was certain. For now, all he could do was try and keep Arthur from asking too much. "I think it might be better if I leave..."

THAT WAS NOT WHAT HE WANTED TO SAY AT ALL.
