This weekend was great. Michelle came to visit me and we had a nice time going to some new restaurants and trying a Chinese take-out place. Plus we broke in my foosball table! I love foosball and haven’t been able to play for a long time, so that was quite nice. Of course, I kicked her ass, but she’s a newbie, so A for effort.
We also sat outside on the patio and drank strawberry daiquiris like the sophisticated, educated people we are, which totally doesn’t match the surroundings. I’ve realized that Annandale is the slum of Fairfax County. Now, that’s not as bad as it sounds. We’re not talking about the slums of Philly here. Remember, Fairfax County is in the top 5 most expensive places to live in the US, so a slum here is a Mecca compared to Allentown. Still, most of the people in the apartment complex appear to have a service job or something blue-collar. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that, but it is a different mindset. Call it a generalization if you must, but people with blue-collar jobs seems like they don’t care so much about public things, only personal possessions. Sure, anyone can act like that, but in my experience it seems to be people with service jobs. For instance, the complex has recycling bins for newspaper (although they don’t have any for plastic, glass or cans, even though the city recycles those items), but people fill those bins with trash, so nothing ever gets recycled. I take my recycling to the recycle bins next to the ABC store (ABC store is the VA liquor store). I’m doing my hippie part to make the environment better, plus I have an excuse to grab a fifth of vodka. Most people in this complex don’t do that. I still haven’t met many people that live here, but that’s the prevailing attitude I’ve experienced.
The interesting thing is how many really nice cars I see parked in the parking lot. I’ve counted two Jaguars, three Mercedes-Benz, a couple Lexus (Lexi?), a few BMWs, and some other high-end cars. What the hell are people doing with cars like this living in an apartment? Either they use all their money to buy those cars, are drugs dealers and need to be semi-nomadic, or they are the cars of sugar daddies visiting their playthings. I don’t get it. I have a nice car (in my opinion) but it was cheap and more of what someone that lives in an apartment should be able to afford. I guess cars are such a status symbol that they matter more than living quarters.
Ugh, it’s so hot in my apartment right now. Damn you, air conditioning, get working!
