So last night I bought a
Mac mini. Marci and I got to the Tyson's Corner Apple store around 8:30 and I asked one of the salespeople if they had any. He went in the back to check. I knew it was a long shot because they are sold out just about everywhere (
Apple Stores show zero availability of Mac mini, iPod shuffle). After a short time he came back and said he had good news and bad news. The good news was that they had one. The bad news was that it was on hold for someone else. However, it was only on hold until the end of the day and the store closes at 9:30. He said if they didn't pick it up by 9:25, I could get it then. I figured, "OK, I'll wander around the mall for an hour and hope they don't show up."
So Marci and I walked around the mall, looking at all the expensive crap. We stumbled on a Lego store, which was a new one for me. I didn't know Lego had their own company stores, but apparently they do. We also found a tea store that Marci wanted to go into because she drinks that bilge water. Their teapots averaged about $180, so we quickly exited (plus they only sell loose tea, and Marci doesn't have whatever apperatus you need to brew tea without teabags).
Even the candy was expensive. They have one of those bulk candy stores where you can get candy that doesn't exist anywhere else (gummy sour Coke flavored candy--WTF?), but the difference is this store charges $1.99 for 1/4 pound. That's right, $8 for a pound of candy. That seems fairly expensive to me.
Anyway, we eventually went back to the Apple store around 9:15 and played with the iPods for a while (Marci now has major iPod lust). At 9:25 I checked with the salesperson and he went back to check if it was still there. It was! I bought it and felt very lucky, considering how hard they are to come by right now.
Now I just need to transfer files from my eMac and sell my eMac and iBook. Then I'm going to use a KVM switch to hook up my Mac mini to the monitor, keyboard, and mouse that I'm currently using on a PC that I built a few weeks ago (the PC will be under the desk, the Mac mini on top).
