End of year assessment of the Sunday 7

Dec 31, 2007 11:16

I posted in my own LJ, but not here. I've completed the Sunday Seven - well, it would have been January 8 to have a full year, but things have gotten a bit frantic around here. However, I've made a huge enough dent to consider it "done."

I've learned a lot from following the Seven Items project very strictly. I've learned to assess if I want things before I get them (nothing like having given away a boxful of T-shirts to keep you from knee-jerk going "Oh, I want that T-shirt!" a week later!) I'm still occasionally buying things that turn out to be wrong or are supplanted by something better later, but I'm not buying for the sake of buying anymore, and that's a huge step in the right direction.

My house is also extremely decluttered. At a random guess, I'd say I've gotten rid of about 1/5 of my possessions - enough to make a real difference.

While I'm not planning on officially Getting Rid Of Seven Things Every Week this upcoming year, I do find myself automatically assessing just about everything I have now. The three questions - do I use it, will I use it, does it hurt me to think of not having it - have become almost automatic. I think there's going to be a basket setup for freecycling things in 2008, because I'm still finding things every day or so that would be just as good in another home.

Highly, highly recommended. It's one of the 5 best lifestyle changes I made in 2007.
