last night we had severe weather warnings. every broadcast network showed their annoying map of oklahoma depicting thunderstorms and tornado watch areas. as helpful as they are, i cannot watch the tv shows behind them.
i slept with the window open (which is not as stupid as it sounds). i've heard windstorms in california that sounded more threatening. last night didn't even rattle the blinds. but it was windy enough to wake me up around 2:30 a.m. i've never heard a tornado before so it's a little intimidating every time a big gust of wind comes through. the sounds are hard to interpret. some trucks drive by and they wail or whistle. i kept thinking i heard a faraway siren. the trains that go by sound like that too. needless to say, at night long you are wondering when it is appropriate to panic.
besides that bad weather, we had good weather too. it has been 60-70 degrees all week! last weekend's trip to lawton was rather pleasant if you don't count the wind blowing you over. dani and i traveled with our congregation to a town 1hr 15mins away for our semi-annual assembly event. in california there is a large enough population to warrant our own assembly hall. in oklahoma, we borrow the auditorium of a middle school. it was different but nice.
dani and i walked around making fun of those motivational posters that they typically have in school lunchrooms saying, "nothing says 'endurance' like a retriever on a mountain." we also marveled at the metal detectors set aside by the front doors. i'm so glad i didn't have to worry about that at my school. that must suck for all the kids with serious orthodontic headgear.
and besides that, nothing exciting happens. i guess that's what life in oklahoma is like. the highlights of the week are bad weather and long drives. you stay up late (until 10:30 p.m.) with your roommate, watch some futurama, drink some hawaiian punch from walmart and start all over again.
