human icebergs

alyse has to be the most impatient person i know. last night i told her i needed sleep and i planned on sleeping in until 11:00. she said okay and would wait for me to either call her or just show up at her door for today's plans.

my phone went off some time around 9:30. i was rather perturbed at that. and i don't know why i answered it. i guess when waking i am not coherent enough to remember the silence button. that may also be why i always turn the alarm off on accident when i meant to hit snooze.

i arrived at her house at 11:05 this brisk morning in shorts and a sweater. we borrowed the key to a community pool and hopped right into the deep end promptly after the poolboys finished cleaning. and it must have been like 40 degrees in that pool. my hands were so cold it hurt to bend my fingers. 2 days of mailers + freezing pool = early arthritis.

alyse and i remained there though. for alyse it wasn't hard of course because she is the mermaid. on the other hand, i am a horrible swimmer and i just stood in the shallow end for most of the time. we swam about for maybe an hour. then alyse and i did our "creative changing" back into clothes. this involves your street clothes, one medium-sized towel, and whatever is around. this is really an art -- to change out of your bathing suit in public without anyone seeing. i have just about mastered it. alyse still requires me to hold the towel for her, as she just cannot figure out how to wrap it around her.

then we went to a&w for some heart-clogging fried food, namely mini corn dogs and cheese curds. usually when i hang out with alyse, we are always rushed and trying to hit three different locations in one day before i have to go to work. we took our time today and played it by ear. it was refreshing.

i already knew this but it feels like i am learning it all over again. the fun is not in the things you do but in the people that you do it with. hanging out with alyse on our low budget activities has produced some of the most enjoyable hanging outs that i can remember. we don't have to go big, like visit marine world or san francisco. we just have to go together.
