Part 1--Hawaii
Like I said, here is my first posting of my adventures this summer.
Now before you start getting all jealous of me and my three week stay in Hawaii, there are a few little details you might want to know about. First of all, I spent most of those three weeks in a tent, in the jungle, sleeping on the ever-growing roots of the trees and listening to the Koki frogs chirp. Time not spent sitting in the tent was spent looking for adequate sanitation facilities, going hungry, and evading the university authorities. Oh, and getting wet. Because in Hilo there is lots of rain, every day.
Second--racism, which likely cost my friend her job. But I better keep my white little mouth shut. Suffice it to say, Hawaiians of Filipino descent are also foreigners to the island; the number of pure-blooded Hawaiians has dwindled to somewhere around 400, and therefore, those who can legitimately practice open xenophobia are very few indeed.
But I don't wanna ruin it for ya. Instead of listening to me ramble on about what is wrong with the state of Hawaii, you may view my selected snapshots and their captions, below.

Here are some shots from Waikiki in Honolulu, where I spent my first few days.
Most of the rest of these shots are from Kilauea, which is the crater at the base of the volcano. Happily, this is on the dry side of the island. Above, we see tropical foliage and a view of the crater through the forest. Below is the crater itself, closer up.
This is me, standing in front of the crater.
This is a pretty damn good picture!
Here is a steam vent.
Danna in front of the lava tube.
And finally, here is some stuff I did in Hilo.
Starting on the left is my friend Danna in front of a church that ran a soup kitchen. We used to come by sometimes and help out. Plus, they gave us free food.
Second--Home Sweet Home. Mine is the pup tent, Danna's is the one in front.
Third--jumping into the ocean.
Fourth--a big ol' banana leaf.
Yep, so that was about the size of it.
Stay tuned for Part 2--Cross Country
