justin: i think back then i would have prefered being a prostitute over being a wife...when you are married you still get the sex but you get none of his money and all of his housework

i had not yet spoken up in class and since the desks were arranged in a "discussion circle" today i decided to contribute a characteristic i thought fit the new working woman of the late 19th century....i proposed that the new woman was more competitive against women and men now that she was out of the private sphere and working, shopping, going out, etc. i think the new freedom and self interest could have developed this trait

that's fine the teacher thought it was an interesting point then little girl in the corner pipes up "i don't think the new woman was competitive..i don't even know where you would get that since the author talks about older women helping out younger women and women going out together etc."

again i explain that it was still important to have feminine bonds but now we are not dealing with communal issues and commen housework help we are out in the world and needing to get that job over the other girl and needing to secure a rich husband over the other girl and get the fancy clothes and the makeup and the leisure time

bitch wants to argue again about how she thinks being competitive was not a characteristic for the new woman

so i say what are we doing right now then?
