Please, my Lord, I implore you to have mercy of these libertine children in the City of Lights. These poor little, lost sheep would find the way back to the herd with Your guidance. Grant them salvation for their sinful souls I beg you!

In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.[Making the sign of the cross, the kneeling young Sister ( Read more... )

The buildings are dyed shades of rose and gold, the setting sun obscured by the black lines of towers and domes rising skyward. He is just setting out for the evening, aimless but alert, when he passes the young nun.

Never one to disrespect authority (at least in public,) he gives her a slight bow as he passes, and a faint smile.

Lilith kept her head down in public, returning the greeting with a quiet bow of her head and without making eye contact. Giving the man a silent blessing. It is only proper for a good woman in that era.

He almost lets her go without further incident; after all he is only just beginning his evening, and a nun is not an ideal companion for any of the activities he's been considering.

But something in her half-hidden face has caught his eye, and he's barely three steps beyond her when he pauses and turns. "Sister... have you a moment?"

She has been awkwardly disciplined to comply with the English protocol, although in Paris she has brazenly disregarded the don't speak of religion rule, not after what she witnessed. France seems so different from England and both countries too distant to the realities of Asia and Africa she has traveled to.

Lilith turns immediately upon being addressed, meeting the man with a smile. "Of course I do." The servants of the Lord must have time for everyone at any time.

Smiling in return he takes a step closer-- not near enough to seem untoward, but nearer than he needs to be to ask a question.

"I was wondering if you could recommend lodgings nearby; I've only just arrived, and they've mistaken my reservations."

It's a cover he's concocted for the evening, no harm in getting the story in place. Besides, he wanted another look at her.

"What a predicament, Monsieur," Lilith murmurs, eyebrows raising. She thinks about this. She is taking asylum in Notre Dame Cathedral as she is here by invitation. Lilith doesn't have the character to stand monasteries.

"There is a small inn near the public hospital. It's not a very luxurious hotel, but its run by God fearsome men who would find a room for you until you can find other lodgings," she suggests. "I am in my way to the hospital and the inn is at the same direction. Would you like me to escort you?"

There's an odd upward twitch of his lip, a brief hint of a humorless smile. He has never been a God fearing man himself, and he looks upon religion as a fool's comfort. But of course these are not times to voice such a thought; nor the right company.

"I would be honored, Sister, to have your guidance."

"Then please, Monsieur, follow my lead," Lilith politely bows and turns to renew her path. Even with this delay, she has calculated that she'll be early to her shift.

How could any Child of God resist to play the Good Samaritan?

Innocence is an attractive quality. She's too high profile-- someone is certain to miss her-- but a fellow can daydream, can't he?

"Much obliged. It's rather difficult to make such arrangements when you don't know the City." He falls into step beside her, keeping her pace, letting her lead.

She nods sympathetically, eyes staring at her rosary.

"I understand, this is my first month in Paris and I had the good fortune of count with His Excellency's arrangements on my behalf." She will have been at loss without the Church aid.

"Ah, you are a traveler as well?" He looks at her, somewhat amused that she does not look back at him. So polite. "Where do you hail from?"

"Only recently," Lilith politely assents as she answers. "India, from Calcutta," she remarks. Her dark complexion and obviously non Caucasian features should be the testament. Although her hair color and eye color do not fit any particular ethnic group.

He might have guessed, if not for the misleading coloring. And one never knows; his own looks say nothing of his origins, being a bit of a mongrel-- easily an average fixture anywhere he might stray. Normal. Unremarkable. It's a helpful trait, being difficult to pick out of a crowd.

Something she is decidedly not, and maybe that's why he's tagging along, rather against his better judgment.

"I've never been." He inclines his head, considering, before casting another glance at her. "What brings you to Paris? I thought in general missionaries traveled east, not west."

"Maybe because the West is certainly in need of help as the far east," Lilith answers, with a hidden irony in her pleasant tone of voice. "For Christian center of civilization and enlightenment, there are quite the number for lost souls in the great capitals." The cries are subtler, in denial with its greatness, but she has noticed.

Her veiled criticism ends.

"I am a medical practicer, I was also sent to absorb the knowledge from the greater hospitals for the missions."

It's an interesting point of view. He's not the sort to seek to justify his crimes, but Brian cannot disagree. The quarters he tends to haunt are precisely those a woman of her vocation would deem in need of salvation; and though they're a haven for him, he can see the hypocrisy of heading out to conquer primitive lands in the name of God while letting sin run rampant at home.

He rather likes you, Sister Lilith.

"Oh? I am in that field myself. Surgery; amputations in particular, and the crafting of false limbs."

A surgeon. He has a doctor's hands, but she hasn't dared to speak that aloud.

"Oh, just general practice," Lilith says with a serene smile. Women aren't meant to be surgeons so they say in the medical community, but in the missions, nobody cares. Nobody really does unless you take their paycheck away. "For the moment, I work as nurse in this public Hospital to assist the better doctors."
