CHARACTER
» Name: Yoshiya "Joshua" Kiryu
» Fandom: The World Ends With You
» Reference:
http://twewy.wikia.com/wiki/Joshua» Canon Point: Post-secret ending.
» Gender: Male
» Age: Unknown - physically, approximately 15 on the RG and early twenties on the UG. He is implied to be much older than he appears, though no specific age is stated. I generally estimate him to be at least 60 or so, mentally.
» Orientation: Unknown. Throughout canon Joshua makes several noted flirtatious/suggestive remarks at Neku, though this can be read either as homosexual evidence or as Joshua trying to provoke Neku into being irritated at him. Since that is Joshua's intent in nearly all of his interactions with Neku throughout that week, however, I don't deem it to be evidence that can be used to make a statement on its own. It is also implied in the secret reports that Joshua rarely switches frequencies to socialize on the RG, and speaks to no one on the UG other than his Producer and Conductor. Therefore, there is no evidence for or against any sexual encounters/preferences he may have.
» Personality: Joshua’s personality functions on multiple levels, as a by-product of formerly being a normal human being and then climbing to a position of godlike power that separates him from almost everyone he observes. It’s implied in canon that the only two people he has really interacted with over the course of his time as Composer are Hanekoma and Kitaniji, and possibly any previous Conductors he’s had.
Because of this, depending on the situation, Joshua may switch between two different sub-personalities he puts on for show, all the while denying the existence of his squishy human insides (sub-personality #3).
1.) SOCIALLY - This is the main portion of how he acts in the game. He’s smug, mischievous, and mocking - an ideal troll. He acts the devil’s advocate for the sake of making people question themselves, a side-effect of being the Composer, though he also does it just for fun. He attempts, and often succeeds in, dominating conversations using off-putting comments, patronizing*, and not-so-subtle inappropriate innuendo. Incredibly mercurial, he prides himself on his self-sufficiency while relying on others to do the dirty work for him. He will talk around things to avoid admitting that he’s wrong or at fault, being deliberately antagonizing and sparking conflict for his own enjoyment, ignoring any feelings of guilt in the rare case that he has them.
(*In Japanese, he refers to everyone as firstname-kun or -chan, and with pronouns that imply a skin-crawly kind of closeness.)
2.) PROFESSIONALLY - His professional qualities are mostly implied by his actions determining the ending of the game (not destroying Shibuya), the brief flashback conversation with Kitaniji where he suggests the month-long game and wishes his Conductor "nothing but success", and through Hanekoma’s
secret reports. This is Joshua’s Composer persona, otherwise known as his Serious Business Face. When situation calls for it, Joshua will abruptly become much more serious and direct, but also more brutal, though to kinder ends. He tends to start speculating about human nature and social psychology, whether it be the meaning of life (/death) or a TV Trope. No, seriously.
Despite being more likely to speak without ambiguity, this is also his hands-off observer mode. He hides behind this aspect of his personality - being the Composer - in order to easily separate himself from others, a cop-out justification for his particularly
Schizoid personality.
3.) INTERNALLY - The hardest aspect of his personality to pick up on, as he tends to ignore it’s even there. Evidenced by his cynicism that closely mirrors Neku’s early on in the game, Hanekoma’s description of him in Week 2, brief moments where he loses control of the situation and/or conversation throughout canon, and, of course, the necessary link between the other two sub-personalities he switches between. Hanekoma describes him as "prickly" and "aloof", but "not a bad kid". He denies any feelings of loneliness, hiding behind his position as Composer, ignoring his hypocrisy in not being able to trust others or get close to them. He covers for all of this by acting repulsive outwardly, as if to falsely justify his insecurities to avoid actual rejection. (These feelings of isolation may possibly be rooted in the implications that he could see the UG and the Game when he was still alive. "I See Dead People," indeed.) Though sharp and people-smart when not directly involved, he doesn’t know how to interact honestly with others, instead attempting to make them act the way he wants them to. He’s incredibly perceptive and sensitive, but oftentimes this is sabotaged by his ego and childish nature.
Prior to the game, he is convinced he’s already living his dreams, and is completely self-confident in his plans and designs as Composer. He feels he is afraid of nothing. By the end of the game, however, he is starting to recognize his own inability to change. Josh, ironically, would lose at his own Game - and in a way, he does. He’s torn between the fact that he knows a change in himself is needed in order to maintain his district, and the fact that he cannot bring himself to admit it.
» Appearance: Despite his mental age, Joshua will still need to be aged-up a few years while in Amat. Luckily, this isn't too hard to visualize. He'll end up looking like the halfway-point between his
RG and
UG forms. Thin, lanky, and pushing about 6 feet tall, he has violet-gray eyes that are often drooped in what looks like sleepiness or boredom. Canon sources have his hair color range from a light gray to ash-blonde, wavy like nobody's business and hanging at about shoulder-length (longer, if straightened). His features are rather androgynously delicate, and his skin is deathly pale (though probably not as pale as in canon, since he is actually actually alive, now). He tends to dress in plain clothing of muted colors, opting for jeans or slacks and button-down shirts. His collar will be a circular glass ring approx. 1.75" in diameter.

» "amatomnes" Entry: One would think that the caterers to a vacation of imprisonment would be a bit more cheerfully hospitable, but it appears the help around here doesn't mind if they reflect badly on the host. After all, I'm sure she must be busy, assigning the same Sisyphean task to each and every new arrival unlucky enough to come across this place! The stone's an awfully strange one to have your visitors roll and is an icky Game, besides.
Regardless! I'm another in the new crowd needing to build a life here from the ground-up, so if anyone has a need for a brilliant and inspired mind, please do let me know. I particularly excel in management positions~
» "amatomneslogs" Entry: As Composer, he rarely slept heavily or regularly. He rarely, if ever, dreamt. His waking mind was far more capable of utilizing possibilities and Imagination than any average mind's unconsciousness.
When he did sleep, it was purely for the pleasure of it, not the necessity.
He never woke up disoriented.
He never woke up feeling exhausted, or like his limbs were made of lead.
This was why, when Joshua first vaguely became aware that he was conscious, he did little more than blink muzzily at the bedclothes and wonder at the familiar feel, but unfamiliar color, of the silk.
...For a few moments, at least, before he felt the draft across his shoulders and his nudity registered. Startled, finally, he scrabbled up onto his hands and knees, crimped hair hanging in his eyes. Naked? And. And sticky?
His fingers dug into the sheets, white-knuckled and longer than he remembered, and just when, precisely, had he switched planes? His heart pounded unfamiliarly - unfamiliar for more than one reason - in his chest.
Barring some choice recent events, Josh was also rarely bewildered. But he was. So much so that he didn’t panic when his attempts to switch frequencies failed, panicked only slightly when his sixth sense proved absent. He sat up, barely shaking, sheet pulled into his lap, letting slip a giggle that sounded dangerously nearing hysterical even to his ears. Perhaps part, he could admit, was in panic, but the rest he considered building fury. Honestly, someone daring to drag a Composer somewhere in this manner...
He also wasn't familiar with the limpness in his limbs, the slight throbs and twitches in places unsightly, but he wasn't one for intimacy - he felt vaguely ill at the thought, in fact - so he chose to ignore it.
It was immediately clear from his surroundings that this was not Shibuya, or even anywhere in Japan. ...Unless it was a very convincing love hotel, but again, he'd rather have dismissed that thought. He was alone, but there were vague murmurs of noise beyond the room, movement distant outside the window, which evidenced the existence of other people. He could not hear their thoughts. He could hear nothing beyond his hearing, could feel nothing beyond his senses.
He was, indeed, naked - when was the last time he could remember being naked? - save for a smooth ring of chill material, possibly glass, looped around his neck and pressing lightly to his throat. His proportions were different, not as tall (nor as fluorescent) as his true form, but not as youthful as the form he'd grown accustomed to bearing during his brief stints in the RG, either.
Stripped of his clothes, powers, and, most importantly, his control of the situation, something echoed in his memory of a life he'd forgotten, and he laughed - giggled - unevenly, dragging himself to the edge of the bed. Clearly, someone quite powerful was responsible for this. Someone was playing him.
Someone was going to suffer for this.
Well, then. Game: on, he cheerfully supposed.
...Right after he found himself a place to bathe until he felt clean and presentable again.
REVISIONS
» Suitability: Joshua, admittedly, will have trouble adjusting in Amat, but this is due to his control freak issues. He'll be stubborn at first, possibly dying a few times, but through the combined influence of Sanae Hanekoma and his own conscience, he isn't going to allow himself to forget Shibuya or being Composer.
As Composer, he's responsible for the growth of every individual that goes through his Game, selecting each entrant's entry fee. This requires him to recognize the darker sides of people: sexual, homicidal, or otherwise. He murders Neku - sort-of-technically twice - with a smirk on his face. Though The World Ends With You doesn't delve much into the sexuality of its characters, Joshua is definitely versed in the darker sides of human nature. Handling and managing human growth and being familiar with murder and backstabbing (see: Sho Minamimoto and Sanae Hanekoma's assassination attempts), acknowledging and having to deal with sexual situations is not a far cry from the 'adult' nature of these things.
Additionally, though his sincerity in canon is unclear, Joshua drops quite a few suggestive remarks throughout the game:
Week 2, Day 1. To Neku: "You watch my behind, I’ll watch yours. Sound good, partner?"
Week 2, Day 2.
Shooter: "Yeah, bro! It’s like your fiery passion slams into the other guy’s, like WHAM!"
Joshua: "Hee hee. Sounds like a fun time."
Sometimes, when you let Neku idle on screen, you have the opportunity to speak to your partner about your current objective. From time to time, Joshua will also make comments about Neku making him blush if he stares too much, and so forth. Also, in the "Another Day" chapter, Joshua's exaggerated "badfic" counterpart is a very... extreme case of this flirtatious behavior towards Neku. Joshua, of pretty much all characters in the game, is the most obvious in being versed in the script of cliché romance, flirtation, and sex.
» "amatomnes" Entry: [The video clicks on to show Joshua smiling sweetly, from the shoulders-up, though if the video was of slightly better quality some viewers might realize that the cheerfulness is entirely fake and the smile isn't quite reaching his eyes. He has a hand curled thoughtfully at the corner of his mouth, subtly obscuring his expression further. His voice, however, though sweet, is otherwise smooth and composed.]
I'm coming to notice a trend, my fellow vacationing captives of Atia~ Obviously, most of us would rather do without this whole collar business, and the reluctance to deal with it is a thorn in many sides. But isn't it odd how this fits into things, considering that the acts to relieve it are based in procreation and life, and the alternative is death?
[His expression shifts a little, look sly to cover up his hypocrisy. He is, of course, furious with the whole thing, someone playing God with him, so why not dodge this and put others on the spot?]
So is it all that bad, then? It looks like this just boils down to what one would be willing to do to keep oneself alive. Or is your ego and integrity more important than that~?
Not that I'm accusing anyone! I'm really just... curious. None of you have to answer.
[He laughs lightly, irritatingly, a kind of "hmm, hmm, hmm". He then cuts the transmission.]
