Summary: As a rule, Salazar doesn’t like looking ahead.

As a rule, Salazar doesn’t like looking ahead. He’s a man of the past and of the present - he wants to find greatness in the past and apply it to himself in this moment, the only one that will ever be truly with him. He likes to work, to lose himself in books and ancient scrolls - but not to have the prospect of being great “someday”. He works to be great as soon as possible, as quick as possible, to bring the moment he’s been yearning for as close as he can to the now. He wants to be powerful now, and if it can’t be now it needs to be the moment after now. He does think of the future sometimes - sometimes he just can’t help it - but he hates the vagueness of it and gets frustrated with the veil that separates him from himself in the tomorrow, in the next week, in the next decade. He doesn’t like closed books, and the future is one.

Rowena once said that she likes that about him, his earthy firmness in believing in the power of now - but she saw a colourful kind of spontaneous happiness in it, while Salazar knows his yearning for this moment is motivated by nothing more than greed. He doesn’t know what the future will bring, so he wants to take what he can right now, and use as much of the time available to him. He didn’t say this to her, though, and simply smiled at the simple feminine joy evident in her face. He knew her interpretation of him inspired her, even if it was for all the wrong reasons, and chose not to alter the way she thought of him. (Secretly, he enjoyed her admiration.)

Tonight, though, his thoughts are focused on tomorrow, and for once it feels as though it’s justified. They’re spending the night together, the four of them - if Rowena’s father knew, he would be shocked into rage - and at the crack of dawn they’re going out to find the spot. To follow the magic that pulls at them, that sings to them. To pinpoint the exact location where they will build their dream. Tomorrow, they’ll know where their school will be.

For once, he is happy about the future.
