Have to disagree with you about 'Kate Bush' blandness. Although the last record was steering itself that way unfortunately she does write about things other than, like, 'girls wanting to have fun' and rehashing all that, which Madonna seems to be doing. Endlessly.
I have to be honest and say I have never been too keen on her. She was always too transparently considered and, as you say, driven. But she is self created and that impresses.
Trying too hard when you are young and trying to get places makes sense.
Trying too hard when you arrived ages ago is tiresome.

That you mention the Stones and the Beatles is interesting. Never been a fan of those either...but I cannot deny the sheer strength of work across their career. Song writing that remains superior to much that has come since even though the music was made in an enrirely different cultural context.
I just wish the Stones and McCartney had shut up years ago.

Going back to Bush (don't mess!). She doesn't make records for years, doesn't do interviews and doesn't do stripper moves in pudenda revealing leotards purely to prove she can at her age.
It is difficult perhaps to avoid blandness but even harder to retain dignity.
