"Well, no, you've made that quite clear." Watson glared. "What, pray, do you suggest that I do instead?"
Holmes didn't miss a beat.
"Stay here. With me. I need you."
Watson sighed.
"I know. I know what you need. But what about me, Holmes? I want to know some tenderness, the warmth of a loving touch..."
Holmes looked up at that.
"But you've never... whenever I..."
Watson blushed, recalling half-reluctantly fending off clumsy, drunken advances.
"That's different. You need me, but you don't love me. You're not capable of it," he said wistfully.

They barely seem to notice the gradual slide from insults to endearments, or if they do neither one of them remarks upon the change. Perhaps it is simply that the use of such phrases as 'insufferable fool' or 'impossible lunatic' have never carried much of a sting, have always only masked a deep affection, evident in the casual, teasing tones with which they are uttered and the tolerant smiles with which they are received. And so in the fullness of time it seems only the most natural thing in the world that 'my dear fellow' should become simply 'my dear'.
