Summary: Mrs Hudson meets Sherlock when he's thirteen and a half, although he doesn't remember it.
Mrs Hudson is very good at looking after people.
It's something she's always been rather good at--good enough that she'd thought of training to be a nurse for a while before her husband, God most certainly not rest his soul, had come along--and she thinks that's perhaps because she enjoys it so much. She likes to make people feel good, to feel better, and she especially likes it when she can employ that most British of remedies--tea.
In the winter of her years (though she herself might say that she's more of an autumn, perhaps even only reaching the end of her summer), she's looking after her boys.
They're not boys, of course, being in their thirties and all, but sometimes she wonders that Sherlock can even tie his shoelaces he's so preoccupied with Other Things (like shooting her walls and storing body parts in the fridge, which she still thinks he doesn't know she knows about). John is the more capable of the two, she's decided, though she still finds their cupboards bare or stocked only with drinks and tins of tuna and baked beans when she Doesn't Come Upstairs To Clean.
So, boys it is, and very pleased she is to have them too.
Mrs Hudson meets Sherlock when he's thirteen and a half, although he doesn't remember it.
He's about to be lanky (not quite there yet), and he looks up at her with light, cat-like eyes from under his fringe (hair like a raucous pudding bowl, or would be, if it didn't curl). It's the evening, a huge house covered in lights and still-hanging Christmas decorations, and Sherlock's mother puts her hand on his shoulder and introduces him as my younger son. Her smile is proud and parental and Mrs Hudson catches the way that Sherlock stays stony faced, shoulder twitching a little under his mother's palm at the word younger.
Mrs Hudson rings in the new year and the new decade with her husband's colleagues and friends and a little boy called Sherlock Holmes, sulking behind the curtains in the bay window. That year her husband will commit his first murder and Mrs Hudson will cover up for him, and in two decades time a man named Sherlock Holmes will be the final piece in the plan to get her life back.
When Sherlock is thrity-four and a half, Mrs Hudson meets John Watson.
"Have you two had another fight?"
Sherlock looks at her from underneath his fringe. He's lounging back in one of her kitchen chairs, staring daggers at his tea, and he hasn't spoken yet. She doesn't wait for an answer, just opens a packet of bourbons and sets them in front of him. Nothing that can't be solved with tea and biscuits, and she tells him as much. He just flicks at the crumbs beginning to decorate the table and she's reminded, as she often is, of a long-ago, sulky little boy at a New Year's Eve party.
"Oh, Sherlock," she finds herself saying; she worries at the neckline of her blouse, then at the shoulder of Sherlock's coat, brushing invisible lint from the tweed. It's always a point of pride when he doesn't flinch away; sometimes she feels like his mother, and it's nice to think that perhaps he doesn't mind. "You two and your little domestics. You know if you were a bit more considerate of things, it's a shared space after all--"
She can see that he's not listening--he's moping, and she's seen Sherlock in a mope and knows what will and won't get through, so she just sighs and settles her hand on his shoulder and thinks about ruffling his hair or perhaps kissing it, the way she might if he was her own.
She won't--she's not his mother, even if they both act like it (and even if she loves him like he's hers)--but she takes the knowledge that it's her hand now, her pride, and adds it to the little space in her mind saved up for Sherlock since he was thirteen and a half (even if he doesn't know it).
