What a great merging of ACD and Usher! I'm not sure I see TAB, but Holmes and Watson came across as very ACD to me. So Victorian, with the secret relationships and worry about disinheritance and family honour (and creepy old houses!). I especially like how attentive and thoughtful Holmes is, in particular to Watson of course but also to Corvus. The switch to first names in the narrative was lovely. A really beautifully put together story.
I was trying to do a three-way merger between ACD and the Victorian Holmes and Watson presented in TAB. It was mainly the visual aesthetic and the mood of TAB rather than its plot that I was hoping to incorporate into an actual Victorian setting, instead of a dream Victorian setting. Definitely it was MF and BC that I was picturing as I wrote.
I am totally delighted that you liked the shift from last to first names, bringing that familiarity not only into the actual light of day, but the full acceptance of John Watson in his private thoughts.
I'm always struck when I read the ACD stories with how thoughtful Holmes is with their clients, but I thought to give it a bit of a twist with Watson being jealous with how attentive Holmes can be.
Fascinating (in the best Spock-voice tradition of that word). I don't know that I've ever read the original Poe tale, but this holds up quite well in any event, with definite atmospheric cues in EAP's direction.
(That said, I sense Moriarty's hand in the application of tags, as I didn't see Basil of Baker Street anywhere in this adventure....)
"I don't see the hand of my friend the professor in every crime. Only in those which elude solution and show a degree of cunning way beyond that of the average criminal."
Moriarty chuckled a hard-edged chuckle. "Confess it, Holmes," he said, "whenever you walk down a country lane, you see my minions crouching beneath every bush."
Whatever the original cause of the error--a meddling minion of Moriarty or a modderly mistake with the mouse--it should be fixed now, and thank you for pointing it out. ;-)
Thank you!! I'm so pleased you liked it. I'm never sure, once a story gets started, where it is going to go, so I am relieved that it was within the scope of what you hoped to receive! :-D
